To my mind this and associated issues have come to define the sz more than owt else. Itcs inception was to be a community where everyone's voice was equal. On the whole, the place has stuck to that principle but when it comes to stuff like this its been a fail of epic proportion. Not once can i remember seeing anything decided by voting. The removal of the private area being a prime example, the thread just fizzled out.... i can see all of the points of view here and am not suggesting there ie anything underhand bit like oi, i would like to see clarification of how we as a community will deal with key decisions. Not the little things but big things like moderation, guest posting, private areas etc. At the moment i dont have a clue what this place is

is it just another forum? Someone please let me know

Well the way I see it, the reason the polls might fizzle out, could be because there the points of how long they should run for, and what constitutes a deciding margin hadn't been decided. (Correct me if I'm wrong though, as I wasn't here when your Private Section thingy transpired, so I'm just judging from what I've seen).
In fairness, Feather has, today, opened 2 threads, to deal with those very two points. As I said earlier, I'm not sure what benefit there was to spreading it over this third thread, as it was already catered for - if anything, it's confused the issue, because people were invited to add any other variant to the existing polls.
Surely it would just simplify things if we got those points resolved, then we'd have a process that everybody understands for when we next want to consult with each other over a point?
I.e. We know that the vote will be open for --- days, everyone will be emailed to notify them so that they can vote if they want to, and a ---% majority will carry it through.
I don't see any reason to complicate it beyond that.
Does anyone see it differently?
