@ gilly i agree thats why i am putting my input into these threads. Just to get this stuff sorted once and for all so it doesnt keep raising its head.

@inbaster. Many ot us have contributed financially to the site and will do again, it isnt really the issue though as its a voluntary thing. It doesnt buy you a vote.
@ dg cool, hopefully we can get some methods laid down that can be applied to all the key decisions

You mentioned the guest posting issue. Having a poll thread to decide a key issue such as that doesn't seem to be the answer right? Nothing gets resolved to everybody's satisfaction.

Surely the only truly fair way to decide these key issues, the big decisions, is to make sure that EVERYONE gets a chance to give their input.

The only effective way to do that is by postal ballot, via email. Sent out to every single member.

I agree with you DG - but just for clarity, once and for all, will it then be a straight majority win?

Thats just my opinion mind, not clarification as any 'definite'. This is all still under discussion as things stand atm.

Single me out if you feel that's appropriate mate. I'm a big lad with broad shoulders. :)

I spent 20+ years as a community worker.
My entire objective in that period was to maximise community participation and control, ideally with consensus.
I have NEVER once seen that come to full fruition because people become entrenched in their opinions and won't be moved.

It is from that experience that I believe, (regrettably), that your aim is laudable but idealistic and only leads to endless pedantic nitpicking, stagnation and boredom.

Once again, I have asked many times for examples of this form of online community 'management' in working practice and nothing has ever been offered up. I suspect there is a damn good reason for that.

I don't ask as a "ahh gotchya" type query,
I'm asking because I would sincerely like to witness it and study how it was achieved and maintained.

I honestly get tempted to challenge you to go set up an online community along these principles and invite me over to watch it's progress. I would love to see it working.

Again mate, we have no personal beef, (that I'm aware of), and I hope you accept I don't mean the above challenge in the form of "If you don't like it, move to Canada!" vein. Fuck that nonsense, I want you here.

We used to use consensus decision making in the Social Forum which met for 3 hrs every week, we still managed to reach consensus on many issues.

G'day Oioioi.

Wouldn't that be attempting to make others conform ?

It would be debating the finer points of consensus with a view to finding consensus regarding consensus.

By your definition all discourse is an attempt "to make others conform".

G'day Oioioi.

Are you attempting to "convince" me that is my "definition" ?

Maybe that's simply your own "definition" that you are attempting to project onto me, after all, it isn't anything that I have stated.
oioioi wrote:

G'day Oioioi.

So far, it appears that your "discourse" is about 'putting words in my mouth'.

Was it my "definition" that you attempted to 'saddle' me with ?

And if not, who's "definition" was it ?

Who 'saddled' me with their definition of 'convince'?
;)

G'day Oioioi.

Hmmm, answering a question with a question ... how direct of you.

You do pose an interesting question though, who did ?

As far as I can see, no one has 'saddled' you with anything, let alone "their definition of 'convince'". Maybe you could point out where someone did that.

Care to answer the questions I asked ?

For some reason you appear to want to avoid answering them. Maybe there's a reason for that,
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

The first poll needs to be double edged, what time frame and what percentage? Until these are resolved we'll be going round in circles forever.

I wasn't suggesting it wasn't, either, but there seems to be some confusion over what "we" are and who owns what etc. That's the only reason I mentioned it.

As far as I know the World Social Forum still exists, the Manchester one fizzled out as it became the same few doing the actual work resulting from the consensus and inevitable burnout followed. It was mainly deciding which campaign to prioritise as a group and how to campaign around it. Generally straightforward as we were all "left leaning", Fathers4Justice turning up made some discussions a bit more "lively" but they couldn't hack having to convince us to unilaterally support their campaign and vanished not long after.
