I haven't read all of this thread, but I’m not bothered if new people join or not.

I like virtually everyone who is here. We’ve basically weeded out the idiots. I’m sorry that we’ve lost a number of people, some of whom are on TZ. It’d be nice if all of the people I like could be on one forum with no idiots, but evidently that’s going to be impossible. If new people join, that’s fine, but I’m not welcoming to new people because at least 90% of the time they don’t turn out to be new at all.

If someone can prove to me over a period of time that they’re going to make a sensible contribution then I will happily welcome them, as per Vizier, but I don’t expect many people of that nature to join from now on.

Just for clarity here ...

Guess who wrote this in a pm..
I looked that the userlist a few nights ago and realised there are 70+ members that show zero posts.
I know that a small number of those are legitimate admin test socks but I wonder about the wisdom of keeping the others hanging around.
One old trick is to join, have greater access to non-public areas/discussions but not post so that you don't reveal your I.P.

What do we lose if we chuck these non-contributors?
What do we gain by keeping them around?

I'd suggest all lurkers and new sign-ups be advised that they are expected to post in the introductions thread at least, (which will reveal their I.P.), or their account will be closed/banned.

If you opted for answer #5 you get a gold star.
(That proposal was then thrown out for open discussion by oi).

Why did I propose that?
As mentioned earlier, it's a routine maintenance thing and, once caught up on, encourages people to contribute, keeps spammers to a minimum, outs socks faster and reduces the likelihood of folks like mild_peril being mislabelled.

I make no apologies for suggesting that. I see no negatives there.

So while you're focussing your sniper sights on oi to continue your vendetta, just know that you are waaaaaaaaaaaay off.

I don't think you should be a moderator of a forum if (a) you have trouble discerning between writing styles (b) you're a bit paranoid and (c) you're easily offended.

In the early days of the IL forum we had such a moderator on board, and they would constantly accuse people (including myself) of being this particular 'sock puppet' that kept coming back to the forum, and the place just started to go downhill from thereon, as it ended up becoming a bit of a focus.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few reasons why the forum eventually hit the deck, but that was definitely one of the seeds.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
