I'll be straight up too. After this recent experience I'm not keen on the idea of an individual 'owning' a chat site.

Now before folks go flying off the handle and taking umbrage at that, I am reluctant about the principle, not any individual.
Sure I get that someone has to be nominated to be the rep in case of heat. It's the financial investment angle that makes me itchy.

I do not believe that 'owning' a site necessarily increases your 'free speech', you'll be subject to the same legal and territorial restraints as anyone else.
The now open fact that it's all being mined, gathered and stored by the NSA/GCHQ and whoever-the-fuck-else is scanning/collaborating with your ISP's makes it a bit silly to pretend we're insulated from that scrutiny.

There's free hosts and board software out there, we can chip in to lose the advertising on most.
Some are even parts of larger communities and may generate passing traffic, (pros and cons in that for sure).

I'm chucking it out there, I think it's a discussion worth having.

Its unavoidable that an individual would have to initially purchase a board and have it regged in his/her name.
I have lots of sites in my name and I'm used to it, hence the offer.

We could ofc use a free board but generally speaking....they suck donkey balls.

Theres no mention of hosting specifically forums with stuff like video chat etc.

We can still do it all manually ofc but it'd be nice to have something with one-click webmin setup.

One of the free ones like pro-boards.com might do it, as they do MMORPG clan forums and the likes with perhaps extra cost to remove ads but I doubt you'd get access to add plugins which'd prolly need SSH access.

I know a lad in london- lchost.co.uk and he's the dogs bollocks basically, he wouldn't like hosting forums though
