Homo Sapiens are the most destructive force this planet has ever seen and yet we call ourselves intelligent. Is it intelligent to destroy the planet we live on? Why are we so short sighted? The future could end up like "idiocracy"

Human beings have stopped evolving and should be persuaded not to have large families, British TV naturalist Sir David Attenborough has said.

The broadcaster, 87, said that he was not optimistic about the future and that “things are going to get worse”.

He said that he did not believe that humans will become extinct but told the Radio Times: “I think that we’ve stopped evolving. Because if natural selection, as proposed by Darwin, is the main mechanism of evolution – there may be other things, but it does look as though that’s the case – then we’ve stopped natural selection.

“We stopped natural selection as soon as we started being able to rear 95 - 99% of our babies that are born. We are the only species to have put a halt to natural selection, of its own free will, as it were.”

Sir David told the magazine that human beings were still evolving in the cultural sphere.

“Stopping natural selection is not as important, or as depressing, as it might sound – because our evolutionary process is now cultural,” he said.

“Humans have a great cultural inheritance as well as a physical, genetic inheritance – we can inherit a knowledge of computers or television, electronics, aeroplanes and so on.

“Each generation has got all these books that tell them these things, so our cultural evolution is proceeding with extraordinary swiftness.”

The broadcaster said of the future: “I don’t think we are going to become extinct. We’re very clever and extremely resourceful – and we will find ways of preserving ourselves, of that I’m sure. But whether our lives will be as rich as they are now is another question.

“We may reduce in numbers; that would actually be a help, though the chances of it happening within the next century is very small. I should think it’s impossible, in fact.”

Speaking about the one-child policy in China, he said: “It’s the degree to which it has been enforced which is terrible, and there’s no question it’s produced all kinds of personal tragedies. There’s no question about that.

“On the other hand, the Chinese themselves recognise that had they not done so there would be several million more mouths in the world today than there are now.”

He said: “If you were able to persuade people that it is irresponsible to have large families in this day and age, and if material wealth and material conditions are such that people value their materialistic life and don’t suffer as a consequence, then that’s all to the good.

“But I’m not particularly optimistic about the future. I think we’re lucky to be living when we are, because things are going to get worse.”

Sir David told the magazine: “I’m luckier than my grandfather, who didn’t move more than five miles from the village in which he was born. I have all kinds of pleasures and luxuries that I appreciate and I’m very, very fortunate. I think that applies to the majority of people – in this country, at any rate.

“But I think that in another 100 years people will look back at a world that was less crowded, full of natural wonders, and healthier.”

I love examples of this sort of 'thinking'.

He bemoans the fact we have stopped natural selection on one hand....then encourages us to have less children on the other.

The obvious result of less children is less opportunity for natural selection to work on the human genome.....

In the western world, anyone agree out there that intelligent people (such as myself) produce smaller families? Jeremy Kyle types seem to produce children like it's a hobby.

He doesn't have a PhD, he has a degree in natural sciences (geology and zoology in his case) from Cambridge which he got in on a scholarship.
Attenborough has repeatedly said that he considers human overpopulation to be the root cause of many environmental problems. In The Life of Mammals, he made a plea for humans to curb population growth so that other species will not be crowded out. In 2009 he became a patron of Population Matters (formerly known as the Optimum Population Trust), a UK charity advocating sustainable human populations.
He has written and spoken publicly about the fact that, despite past scepticism, he believes the Earth's climate is warming in a way that is cause for concern, and that this can likely be attributed to human activity.[63] He summed up his thoughts at the end of his 2006 documentary "Can We Save Planet Earth?" as follows:
In the past, we didn't understand the effect of our actions. Unknowingly, we sowed the wind and now, literally, we are reaping the whirlwind. But we no longer have that excuse: now we do recognise the consequences of our behaviour. Now surely, we must act to reform it — individually and collectively, nationally and internationally — or we doom future generations to catastrophe.
In a 2005 interview with BBC Wildlife magazine, Attenborough said he considered George W. Bush to be the era's top "environmental villain". In 2007 he further elaborated on the USA's consumption of energy in relation to its population. When asked if he thought America to be "the villain of the piece", he responded:
I don't think whole populations are villainous, but Americans are just extraordinarily unaware of all kinds of things. If you live in the middle of that vast continent, with apparently everything your heart could wish for just because you were born there, then why worry? [...] If people lose knowledge, sympathy and understanding of the natural world, they're going to mistreat it and will not ask their politicians to care for it.[64]
In 2012 Attenborough was quoted as saying that the planet has always and will always look after itself but:
what worries him most about the future of the natural world is that people are out of touch with it ... over half the world is urbanised; some people don't see any real thing except a rat or a pigeon ... ecosystems are incredibly complex and you fiddle with them at your peril."[65]
Also in early 2009, the BBC broadcast an Attenborough one-hour special, Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life. In reference to the programme, Attenborough stated that "People write to me that evolution is only a theory. Well, it is not a theory. Evolution is as solid a historical fact as you could conceive. Evidence from every quarter. What is a theory is whether natural selection is the mechanism and the only mechanism. That is a theory. But the historical reality that dinosaurs led to birds and mammals produced whales, that's not theory."[74] He strongly opposes creationism and its offshoot "intelligent design", saying that a survey that found a quarter of science teachers in state schools believe that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in science lessons was "really terrible".[74]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough

I think his interview quoted in the OP has been 'cherry picked'....as with most scientists of his ilk...they don't have much time for humans, they prefer animals and the natural world, and when you look at us as a species, we are pretty insane and disrespectful of our planet and its resources. We as humans live for the 'now' and to hell with our grandchildrens future Just my thoughts.

David has been blatantly pushing the Eugenics line for years, and he's still here.
Of course he means there's too much of a certain type of people, that particular category of people however does not exist in Reality.
It really creeps me out every time I come across him, I used to love his programming as a child.

He also went to Cambridge University and joined the Navy.

And I have no idea of the significance of that either. :coffee:

Correct, he has several honorary doctorates but nothing he earned himself.
Regardless he's still a malthusian cunt who has 2 kids and he's already used more carbon than probably all of us on this forum put together.
Someone should remind them there's a whole fucking universe out there not to mention the mountains, deserts, oceans and tundra thats entirely unpopulated because people have to crowd around working in slave farms for cunts like him.

Ehrlich and Holdren ought to be fucking shot, they're even more scary than the nazis.
Unfortunately Holdren is science advisor to obama and as for Ehrlich (shudders) he's on record as saying that australians are 'overpopulating', this in the least populated CONTINENT bar antarctica ffs lol.

Here it is re-worded from the elite pov:

There are too many proles who we need to share our wealth with today and our land with to keep them happy and from revolting, in fact they are just becoming...revolting.
We need to cull them quietly perhaps by putting shit in their cheap food and water and sterilising them all, or perhaps a few wars or perhaps taking away their means of food production via GM crops or perhaps by a combination of all the above.

Then the world will be in 'balance' again. Most especially the economy will be in 'balance' again as in balanced in our favour and we can carry on using the fractional reserve banking system and corporate taxation collection that has worked so well thus far at keeping the wealth in our hands

I realised years ago when I read some books by James Lovelock, that there is a lot of supremacism and misanthropy dressed up as "caring and love for the planet".

Tbh I do think we are overpopulated already. That is not to say that I would wish to see people forceably being prevented from having children or owt like that.

What I would like to see is us stopping destroying the worlds rainforests. The prevention of habitat loss from the other living breathing creatures we share this planet with.

It is all well and good looking at a map and saying that there are vast areas of land left uninhabited by human beings but that does not mean they should be colonised and fucked up beyond all recognition because humans are, through medical and other means able to prolong their lifetimes beyond the natural cycle of things.

We are not the only inhabitants of the planet.
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.
