Approximately 400 people from various extreme-right groups gathered in Cegléd where a conflict took
place with the local Roma. The event was organised by Szebb Jövőért Polgárőr Egyesület (Civil
Guard Association for a Better Future), but members of other far right organisations were also
present. The Mayor of Cegléd stated that he saw several Jobbik representatives as well. The event
started with a patrol near the Romani settlement in Cegléd. Later, this event escalated to a conflict
between the local Roma and the far-right groups who were marching. A local activist who works with
the Romani community reported to the Roma Press Center that at least one person was injured and
that the Roma were very frightened. The police were alerted and the authorities arrived in time to stop
the events from escalating.

So what purpose did the police serve in this incident?

Did they stop racism?

NO.

Did they stop violence?

NO.

So why exactly do we need an institution that only reacts after a crime unless there is a potential crime against a corporation or the state?

They did stop violence from escalating.
Your post sounds like an argument for 24hr police surveillance, if there were no Police, what would the Roma have done as the 400 or so Fascists realized there was no opposition to their "demonstration"?

That is why police are required, they are essential to help out the little guy when he has no other support.

That is why police are required, they are essential to help out the little guy when he has no other support.

They're not much use when you're set upon and you have to wait 15 mins for them to get there.
As oi says, they invariably arrive after the carnage, unless its something like this thats known about and takes a while to 'escalate' as it says.

How do authoritarians enforce anything 'better' if this is the best they can come up with? More specifically best for who?

We do have guns in the UK andyh, you can own shotguns very easily here.

Handguns and assault weapons were banned because of crazy bastards shooting up schools and towns etcetera.

Anyone can get a gun if they want one, thats always been the case regardless of law.
Shotguns are not too tricky if you have a mate with some land and some rabbits and someone to vouch for you.

Theres still crazy bastards going round stabbing people all over the place, I've yet to see any law banning knives.
