DM, I AM disillusioned. Back in the 90s there were so many 'active' folk and so much action taking place that I genuinely felt critical mass was looming. Then people just seemed to go back to apathy. I have to wonder if that coinciding with the spread of the internet is mere coincidence. Nowadays I do get frustrated that so many do zilch except moan.
I keep plugging away, but am really conscious that it seems a losing battle. And that makes me moan on the internet
Yes I understand feeling disillusioned and I agree the 90s seemed more dynamic. I think the internet needs to be taken for what it is - a means of rapid communication. I don't condone the riots that spread from London (though I find the inarticulate, barely formed expressions of of a sense of social injustice you got coming through from some of the rioters in the aftermath interesting), but what was impressive was they way the rioters organised themselves so rapidly and efficiently with Facebook playing a major role in this.
Otherwise, he internet gives you somewhere to express yourself. Maybe that outlet lets of steam that would otherwise be directed IRL, I don't know.
I think a big problem is people don't know what to do or what they're aiming for. My personal bugbear is the collapse of alternative ideology and its replacement with woo. By this I don't mean conspiracies par se, I mean this:
In the focus on Icke's anarchy facepalm, what was overlooked was the fact he didn't say anything worth shit. Apart from apparently not realising atoms are very small and as well as having space in them not meaning the world is an illusion, for us the atomic scale is irrelevant in terms of our daily lives and isn't going to matter to you if you're hit by a bus. Or more pertinently if you're going to be made homeless by the bedroom tax. Icke sounded like he was on an acid comedown. All it needed was for Phillip Schofield to pass him a spliff and stick on an Orb CD. While on the DIF everyone gushes about how incredible he was and what an awesome message he was spreading. None of them seem to have noticed he didn't say anything that had any relevance to shit that's actually going down.
Lots of people are frightened and pissed off but instead of thinking politically and thinking about how they can organise themselves, they're drawn into thinking if they imagine the world is an illusion they're on the road to salvation. They're told to reject the 'left/right paradigm' and replace it with...what exactly?
It concerns me that this industry has perhaps played a major role in diverting people who might otherwise have thought seriously in political terms. You might say public apathy coincides with the rise of the internet, but it also coincides with the growth in popularity of people like Icke and Alex Jones.

DWP seeks law change to avoid benefit repayments after Poundland ruling.

The Department for Work and Pensions has introduced emergency legislation to reverse the outcome of a court of appeal decision and "protect the national economy" from a £130m payout to jobseekers deemed to have been unlawfully punished.
"This is almost unbelievably disgusting. They [the DWP] broke the law, now they want to retroactively change the law so that they didn't break the law in order to keep £130m out of the pockets of some of the poorest people in the country.
"The high court found workfare unlawful precisely because people had no way of knowing the rules that applied. It shows an incredible level of arrogance and disregard for the poorest to now attempt to backdate laws to challenge this ruling."

Great post DM. The spiritual/inner path mustn't be ignored/played down/ridiculed, it IS perhaps the most important thing we can do in life. Removing all the layers of bs that get ingrained into us and that go toward creating what we perceive as reality. In that regard I have a certain amount of respect for people like icke. More so igan. However even then icke just sports a whole load of new bs based on one trip and a lot of second hand 'insight'.
What is crucial is balance. Balancing that inner journey with the external reality. the woo woos shun the external. Ignoring the concept that all creation is made of the same stuff, symbiotic and essentially one.
The hardcore politicos ignore the inner journey.
Balancing them is imo the way to go. This is how I approach my time on this earth.
There is shit in us and shit outside of us. Do we want to wade through and drown in shit? Not likely.
So we need to deal with the shit innit.
