Am slightly dumbfounded. Having followed the McCann's case since 2007 I couldn't figure out years ago why the police hadn't gone to mobile phone providers to get data on the deleted texts and calls made by the McCann's on the night of Madeleine's "disappearance". Putting aside the (then) PM Gordon Brown, the pope and various influential people that supported them, it seemed a no-brainer to investigate the phone records. Now, six years after the event - "Duh, let's get the phone records!"
But then they've had protection from the off and the whole affair stinks of a cover-up, as anyone who looks into it in detail with an open mind must surely agree.
It is something you assume would have been done as a matter of course early in the investigation eh?
Secondly, I wonder if there was a requirement on the service provider(s) at the time to store phone data records and, if so, how long they would be required to hold them for.
The type of data held is the elephant in the room though.

They are looking into the phone records of people that they know were in the area at the time. In the eyes of the press law the parents are not in the frame.

I should have clarified - my point was that in 2007 immediately after Maddie's "disappearance" the McCanns that evening deleted all the records on their mobile phones. Now why would they do that? Added to the incriminating evidence against them, the refusal to answer police questions, spending not 1 minute of their own time (by their own admission) searching for their daughter, an eagerness to sue anyone who challenged their (variable) stories, and setting up a limited company fund in the guise of a charity to pay their mortgage and live off, the whole thing stinks. Anyway, these phone records could have been accessed by the police years ago and could well have been revealing.

dumbfounded. Having followed the McCann's case since 2007 I couldn't figure out years ago why the police hadn't gone to mobile phone providers to get data on the deleted texts and calls made by the McCann's on the night of Madeleine's "disappearance". Putting aside the (then) PM Gordon Brown, the pope and various influential people that supported them, it seemed a no-brainer to investigate the phone records. Now, six years after the event - "Duh, let's get the phone records!"
Anyway, these phone records could have been accessed by the police years ago and could well have been revealing.
