Gty Yangtze River Dm 120907 Wblog

For a river known as the “golden watercourse,” red is a strange color to see.

Yet that’s the shade turning up in the Yangtze River and officials have no idea why.

The red began appearing in the Yangtze, the longest and largest river in China and the third longest river in the world, yesterday near the city of Chongquing, where the Yangtze connects to the Jialin River.

The Yangtze, called “golden” because of the heavy rainfall it receives year-round, runs through Chongqing, Southwest China’s largest industrial and commercial center, also known as the “mountain city” because of the hills and peaks upon which its many buildings and factories stand.

The red color stopped some residents in their tracks. They put water from the river in bottles to save it. Fishermen and other workers who rely on the river for income kept going about their business, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.

A stretch of China's Yangtze River has mysteriously turned red around the city of Chongquin. Officials are investigating the river's transformation, as nobody is quite sure what caused it. The river began turning the color of a nice marinara sauce on Thursday.

The Yangtze River is the longest in Asia and the third-longest in the world. The affected area of the river -- reportedly turned "the color of tomato juice" is generally in the vicinity of the industrial city of Chongquin, although red sections of the river have been reported elsewhere, as well.

While some citizens are concerned about the river turning red, others are interested by the transformation. The Daily Mail has several photographs of Chongquin inhabitants fishing in the water and filling bottles with the red river water to show off later.

i once heard somewhere that this happened in india after comets/meteors came down, it was dust particles or something like that that turned the waters red...they think thats kind of like what happened back when the nile (i think?) turned red in the bible story
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood

Wow! Weird.

It'd be good if it was meteorites etc...but it could be industry related.

The first thing I thought of was some kind of biblical bad omen.. I wonder how long until some new-agey lunatic picks up on the story. I could imagine somebody like David Wilcock might have a use for this kind of story.

The most likely culprit is iron. Iron oxide specifically.
Probably thousands of tons of it dumped somewhere near the river upstream.
China is after all the biggest importer.

Offtopic, but did I manage to insult the lunatic new agey types? I shiuld have used a smiley I guess.. I was being sarcastic. And besides, I'm sometimes a bit new agey and lunatic myself.

Yea andy, it could very well be iron. The colour is like fresh surface rust.
