100 injured as meteor falls in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region

:hide:
Moscow: A meteor streaked across the sky over Russia’s Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and reportedly injuring around 100 people.

Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.

Its all a bit worrying .

Is this the first meteorite to hit earth and injure people in modern times?

Is this the same one that NASA said would come close but not hit us on Friday?

RT says 500 :(
The Urals are sparsely populated even by Russian standards. If hat had hit the UK, I shudder to think

The Emergency Ministry reported that 20,000 rescue workers are operating in the region. Three aircraft were deployed to survey the area and locate other possible impact locations.

RT answers your question dawn: The incident in Chelyabinsk bears a strong resemblance to the 1908 Tunguska event – an exceptionally powerful explosion in Siberia believed to have been caused by a fragment of a comet or meteor.

Thanks Mickey

I always associated the Tunguska event with Telsa, slightly disappointed to hear it was a metorite

Your right though, imagaine if that had hit London!

Was there no warning , like Andy suggested I would have thought NASA and all the other space agencies would have been all over this warning people to evacuate the area (or does that just happen in the movies)

Judging by the speed and scale of their response (20000) rescue workers) it seems that Russia was on stand-by.

That is, if we canbelieve RT, of course

That is true Jane

Like I said all a bit worrying

I always try and be rational and avoid the 'oh the end is nigh' stuff but this last week has really unsettled me for some reason.

The pope resigning, the meat scandal, now this meteorite .....something is off kilter , it is perhaps manufactured by the PTB to incite fear, and if it is it's working.

I've had conversations with 'normal' people this week who are feeling unsettled for some reason . People who wouldn't be into conspiracy theories in a million years yet they are saying conspiracy like things....it is worrying me and affecting my mood if i'm honest

I would say the one that hit russia was too small to be identified in advance and that yeah it was just smaller rocks surrounding the larger one.

'According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak reports quoting a source in the military.'

Looks like SAM's took it out too....

Andy what's a SAM?

SAM= Surface to Air Missile.

And no, that was definitely a meteor, very characteristic. The flash and then the change of path and colour of vapour was not. Hence the SAM report being possible I spose.

so what is a meteorite? Are there just lumps of rock just floating about in space that could fall on earth at any moment?

I don't know anything about space or meteorites hence me asking

A scientist on Sky said this meteor and the asteroid are not related.
Also this...
[quoteThis morning, there was a spectacular meteor event over the city of Chelyabinsk, unfortunately resulting in damage and injuries. Of course, with the increasing attention around the asteroid 2012 DA14, this event has immediately sparked the question if the two are related.

They are not.

The reason that we can discount the possibility of the two being associated in any way can be reduced to the following reasons.

Firstly, we need to look at the trajectories. The asteroid 2012 DA14 is approaching from the south. It will slingshot past the Earth and continue rising to the North.

However, the Chelyabinsk event is coming from a different direction. The city is at 55°09′N 61°23′E and the event radiant (the position of origin of the meteor) is above and to the left of the rising sun.
