Bear in mind the steady rate of improving detection ;)
Also bear in mind that they're as common as muck, certainly small ones are. Its a bit like earthquakes :D

Those Tefal-headed boffins have tracked the trajectory of the meteor.

urania.udea.edu.co/sitios/facom/research...abinsk-meteoroid.php

In February 15 2013 a medium-sized meteoroid impacted the atmosphere in the region of Chelyabinsk, Russia. After its entrance to the atmosphere and after travel by several hun- dred of kilometers the body exploded in a powerful event responsible for physical damages and injured people spread over a region enclosing several large cities. This project is intended at a complete reconstruction of the orbit of the Chelyabinsk meteoroid.

Just watched Horizons programme on BBC1 about this tonight.
Pretty scary shit in some parts. If this meteor had stayed up just another 12 months, it would have continued on its given trajectory and...to quote more or less....would have come down on EXACTLY the same date (Feb 15th) but somewhere over northern England/northern Ireland!

If that's not enough...the fact it 'exploded' in the atmosphere and not actually 'hit the deck' so to speak was a far better outcome. Because if it had crashed into the ground the explosive power would have caused untold damage. Now this bit I knew/understood, however, because of the way this bit was presented, it got me thinking about whether there is any truth in the 'conspiracy' theories doing the rounds on other forums that the meteor was blasted with a missile to avoid such a catastrophe.

I didn't see the Horizon show but I heard a scientist last week say that if it had entered the atmosphere 2 seconds later (or was it earlier?) it would have been a ground impact and not an airburst. The impact would have wiped out hundreds of square miles. :O

There is another big one on the way in 2029. It will skim our atmosphere and when it comes back in 2036 and depending on any course alteration due to the 2029 skim will either hit us directly or go past.
It's a biggie as well, a city buster. :O

Hello? Mr Willis? Are you busy in 2036?

If anything there are more fairly big ones on the way that we haven't discovered yet.
There's millions of bits of rock floating around up there and the likelihood of getting hit is actually pretty high.

There's trillions more small ones that people see as shooting stars ofc and that happens just about every night if you take a look (and day too but you can't see it ofc)

Cool, the 2029 asteroid is called Apophis.

The most dangerous one is called Apophis, which is 1,000 feet across and will come dangerously close to Earth in 2029 and again in 2036. The most recent calculations show that Apophis will barely miss Earth in 2029, but will actually graze our atmosphere. But because of the uncertainty of its path as it whizzes past, there is a small possibility that its orbit may be perturbed so it might actually hit Earth in 2036. NASA scientists are reasonably confident it will still miss Earth in 2036, but the head of the Russian space agency takes the threat of a collision seriously, stating that we have to prepare for the worst. If Apophis hits Earth, it would have the force of approximately 20,000 Hiroshima bombs.

I thought Chicxulub would have had a big 'Ka-blamo!' indicator, not a tiny dot.

Meteor Doom Update

NASA: New Chelyabinsk-like meteor strike 7-times as likely as thought
New research out of NASA suggests the odds of the Earth being rocked by another meteorite on par with the one that unexpectedly shook Chelyabinsk, Russia earlier this year are higher than previously estimated.

On Wednesday this week, officials with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced their latest findings regarding February’s meteorite, and it isn’t good news for anyone alarmed that another soaring chunk of rock could come ripping through Earth’s atmosphere.

Scientists say that the Chelyabinsk meteorite was the largest foreign body to hit Earth in almost a century, and similar ones could soon be on the way. Bill Cooke, who leads NASA’s meteoroid environment office at the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center, said during a press conference this week that there is a pretty good chance of seeing something similar in the near future...

I suggest we all flee to the bunkers and hump like rabbits. Just a suggestion.
