Fraud, Money Laundering and Narcotics. Impunity of the Banking Giants. No Prosecution of HSBC

In another shameful decision by the US Department of Justice, earlier this month federal prosecutors reached a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) with UK banking giant HSBC, Europe’s largest bank.

Shameful perhaps, but entirely predictable. After all, in an era characterized by economic collapse owing to gross criminality by leading financial actors, policy decisions and the legal environment framing those decisions have been shaped by oligarchs who quite literally have “captured” the state.

Founded in 1865 by flush-with-cash opium merchants after the British Crown seized Hong Kong from China in the aftermath of the First Opium War, HSBC has been a permanent fixture on the radar of US law enforcement and regulatory agencies for more than a decade.

Not that anything so trifling as terrorist financing or global narcotrafficking mattered much to the Obama administration.

As I previously reported, (here, here, here and here), when the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations issued their mammoth 335-page report, “U.S. Vulnerabilities to Money Laundering, Drugs, and Terrorist Financing: HSBC Case History,” we learned that amongst the “services” offered by HSBC subsidiaries and correspondent banks were sweet deals, to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, with financial entities with ties to international terrorism and the grisly drug trade.

maybe our kids kids will ask hey, why didn't you guys do anything about that. why didnt you go burn down their mansions. and i dont know what to say, it happened right in front of us. why didnt we? shouldnt we do something? this is 2013 now.

I'm kind of scared of the consequences of burning down their houses, I feel the law would be more likely to protect them than me! But you're absolutely right, otherwise.

Something that people can do in Britain is not use any of the major high street retail banks. They all invest in the arms industry. We know what else HSBC get up to. They should be boycotted.

I don't know if you know about this. But even the guy that swam out to interrupt the boat race was absolutely vilified and hammered in the press. All he did was interrupt some stupid bloody privileged university boat race. They will make you look like the worst human-being in the world if you even attempt something like this. And the vast majority of the public will suck it up. And I don't want to go to prison.

But, yeah, you're right that there's no justice and it's going to keep on happening.

Well we know the politicians don't give a shit.
Neither do the media (long gone are the days of even a decent print media).

These should be the people shouting their fucking heads off and kicking up a fuss. Their role is to protect (ha!) and inform us of what we need to know and hold up these examples of criminal activity and keep banging on until someone is held to account and does some hard time.(uber-ha!).

Unless Batman turns up soon we are on our own. Burning sounds fun but as WUB points out you'll just end up in jail. Like WUB I can't go to prison, pretty boys like us get used as currency in those places.
