Tory MP Chris Skidmore says cuts aren't so bad as people aren't 'lying dead in the streets'
Rising Conservative star insists his conference remarks to the Thatcherite Free Enterprise Group were taken out of context

A rising Tory star has played down the impact of Government cuts because they have not left people “lying dead in the streets”.
Chris Skidmore made the remarks at the Conservative conference during a meeting of the Thatcherite Free Enterprise Group.

The 32-year-old MP for Kingswood, near Bristol, was one of three people pictured walking with David Cameron on the opening day of the conference. He also introduced ministers Jeremy Hunt and Michael Gove when they addressed delegates.
But the historian said his quotes had been taken out of context.

He added: “The point I was making was that when we were making cuts, people suggested they were so bad that people would be lying dead in the streets. That has clearly not happened.
"With the economy recovering it is not the picture of doom that was predicted.”

Furious Labour MP Lisa Nandy said his remarks exposed the Tories’ callous attitude to people hit hard by their austerity measures.
She added: “It’s a pretty extreme measure by which to assess the impact of cuts. Hundreds of thousands have been hit by the bedroom tax and a million youngsters are out of work.

“People will be shocked to hear the dismissive way Tories treat suffering.”

He should take a look at the figures for deaths of the homeless, and the typical age they die at. You don't see much publicity about it, and the corpses get shifted quickly, but he's a very ignorant sod if he doesn't think there are poverty-stricken dying in the streets, and there's plenty going on now to ensure those numbers rise.

He gets my 'Dick of the Week' vote.

He's probably fucking stupid enough to actually believe it.

The only reason there aren't bodies in the streets is because of food banks. Presumably, then, the Tories will be thankful for this vital service?

A Tory MP has been blasted for claiming emergency food parcels should not be given to people because they could become reliant on them.

Paul Maynard, who works for Minister of State Oliver Letwin, said people could start going to food banks out of habit rather than helping themselves.

Mr Maynard, Tory MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, was speaking at a food poverty summit in Manchester.

He said: “I value personal responsibility. My main concern for the immediate future is that people have the most money in their pockets as possible.

“I do not believe that immediate food relief should be the role of the Government. We can’t make food banks part of the welfare state.

“What I don’t want to do is normalise food poverty. In Canada you have people going to food banks every week and it can become a habit.”
Yeah, it's terrible when people become "reliant" on food.

If you were writing a farce or a satire, you wouldn't put this stuff in it because it would seem too far-fetched.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

He's absolutely right. There are plenty lying around sleeping in shop doorways round my way though. They can't be dead as they are gone by the next morning.

I'm starting to think that whole rapture thing actually did happen and this is what we've been left with... :umm:
