I wonder if she was already having problems/pressures, and her superior at work is a real asshole and she got royally berated and and threatened, then the staff treated her like shit because she put that call through and made them all look bad (in their own eyes). It could have been the straw that broke the camels back.

If you get Data Protection thrown at you, you can face prosecution, and a considerable amount of being shat upon by your employers because they can be liable too. The likely punishment (apart from the sack) as you might guess, involves levying of big , fat, unrealistic fines that can bankrupt people. If any of that went on, they'll want to keep it quiet, because the public won't like it - their sympathy will be with her, not the authorities or the royals.

But I'm thinking there's more to it than that. If she hadn't been a mum, I could see someone crumbling under that kind of threat, perhaps - but when you've got a family, I think you might be more inclined to fight till you drop. Let's face it, any legal council she took would recognise the public's influence if they were made aware of what was happening. Unless it was actually royalty pushing for her to be punished, meaning the public would never find out any details. In which case, she'd be screwed. Still wouldn't top myself - would you? It's suspect to say the least.
