Froggie posted this vid in my Pepsi thread recently, and it got me to thinking. There are a few things I found around the house that actually have this crap in them, and I never even realised. I knew it can't be good for you and I'd heard some of the rumours and horror stories, but how many of us actually really check the ingredients of what we buy?

Hope you don't mind frog, but thought this vid deserved it's own thread to kick off.

I did some investigating in my local small business killer today, and I noticed that this stuff is pretty prevalent, despite the numerous health warnings. As well as being in some things I never would have expected, it is also, of course, in EVERY diet soda I looked at. It is used in this instance to replace the sweetness lost by removing sugar (thus making the product 'no added sugar' or 'diet').

Issues with sugar aside, I'd rather that than be ingesting this crap. If you drink any kind of diet soda, have a look. It's also used in sugar-free gum, among other things. Basically, anything with 'sugar-free' on it as well as some things that have nothing to do with low-sugar or dieting.

They put it in all sorts now and you even get a lot of drinks that have aspartame as well as sugar in them. Sauces are bad for it. They even put it in some coleslaw.

Aspartame is shit :barfonu: , I'm allergic to this crap as I found out many years ago when I tried putting it in hot drinks. Within a day or two of using it I started to get loads of weird head and neck pain unlike any kind of pain I've ever had. As soon as I stopped using it the pains vanished. I've managed to get quite a few people off this rubbish by warning them about it.

I remember reading somewhere recently (last week or so) that they changed the name here in the US. It's no longer "Aspartame" but "something sweet"...figured they would sneak it into stuff. I'll see if I can find the information again.
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood

Yep, mayo is a favourite for 'glucose corn syrup' too, I found out today. Different issue, but same dif. Why?!

That's a good thing though really, eh silverwand? You have an in-built detection system!! Most of us can chug the stuff down for months before we even realise.

Funny you should say that actually...I've been trying to kick my pepsi habit recently, and one of the tricks I employed was the replace it with something I thought wouldn't be quite so bad for me. For the first couple of days, I was drinking Robinsons fruit squash with tap water, as that's all I had. It wasn't until I looked at the ingredients and noticed that it contained aspartame, that I started to join dots.

I had been suffering from terrible migraines for the first few days, and assumed it was simply 'sugar withdrawal'. Once I saw what was on the label, I stopped drinking it and haven't had any headaches since.

Hmmm....

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame
Aspartame (APM; /ˈæspərteɪm/ or /əˈspɑrteɪm/) is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages. In the European Union, it is codified as E951. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first sold under the brand name NutraSweet; since 2009 it also has been sold under the brand name AminoSweet. It was first synthesized in 1965 and the patent expired in 1992.

The safety of aspartame has been the subject of several political and medical controversies, congressional hearings and internet hoaxes[3][4][5] since its initial approval for use in food products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. A 2007 medical review on the subject concluded that "the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener".[6] However, because its breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU).

Info from the Food Standards Agency:

www.food.gov.uk/safereating/additivesbranch/55174
Aspartame is an intense sweetener, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, which has been used in soft drinks and other low-calorie or sugar-free foods throughout the world for more than 25 years. It is also referred to as E951.
Sweeteners and all other food additives are tightly regulated and may only be used once their safety has been rigorously assessed.

Aspartame was first approved in the UK in 1982 following the review of its safety by the UK's Committee on Toxicity, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT), a committee of independent experts that advises the Government on the safety of food chemicals. This was reaffirmed in 1988 by the European Commission's former Scientific Committee on Food (SCF).

Following the publication of a number of anecdotal reports, which cast doubt on the safety of this sweetener, the SCF reviewed more than 500 papers published in the scientific literature between 1988 and 2001 on the safety of aspartame, including studies supporting the safety of aspartame and others pointing to potential adverse effects, which concluded, in 2002, that there was no evidence to suggest a need to revise the outcome of their earlier risk assessment or the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) previously established for aspartame of 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day (40 mg/kg bw/day).

A study published by the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy, in July 2005 claimed to have shown that rats given dosages of aspartame equivalent to the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) may develop tumours. EFSA assessed the study and raised a number of concerns regarding it. They concluded, that ‘there is no need to further review the safety of aspartame nor to revise the previously established ADI'.

The Agency supports the conclusions of these reviews and also reiterates that all approvals of food additives should be kept under review as and when new scientific information becomes available. As part of its systematic re-evaluation of all food additives mentioned above, EFSA has started to re-evaluate the safety of Aspartame (see link below for further information). As part of this, EFSA announced a call to all stakeholders requesting the submission of any available documentation on aspartame.

More on phenylketonuria:
There is a group of people who cannot safely consume aspartame. These are the sufferers of the inherited disease phenylketonuria (PKU), who are unable to metabolise the amino acid phenylalanine effectively, leading to the accumulation of potentially harmful levels. PKU is a serious, metabolic disorder, affecting 1 in 10,000 individuals and if untreated, it can cause serious brain damage.

Sufferers are normally diagnosed shortly after birth by a routine blood test and need to follow a very strict diet in order to limit their intake of phenylalanine, which is a normal constituent of proteins in food. Since aspartame is also a source of phenylalanine, all food products containing aspartame are clearly labelled to indicate the presence of phenylalanine so that those people who suffer from PKU can avoid consuming these products. This labelling is a legal requirement.

Because high levels of phenylalanine can harm an unborn baby, women who have PKU and are actively planning a family follow a pre-conception phenylalanine-controlled diet. In the UK, all newborn babies have been screened for PKU since 1969. It is highly improbable that anyone born before 1969 would have PKU and been unaware of their condition, especially if there is no family history of PKU. However, women who are actively planning a family who have concerns about PKU should contact their doctor.

Chocolate anyone?
As well as the general requirement for foods to carry a list of food additives and other ingredients, products containing sweeteners such as aspartame must show the statement 'with sweetener(s)' on the label close to the main product name.

Foods that contain both sugar and sweetener must carry the statement 'with sugar and sweetener(s)'. In addition, foods that contain aspartame must be labelled with a warning 'contains a source of phenylalanine'. This warning is specifically to aid individuals who suffer from phenylketonuria (PKU), so that they can avoid such foods (see above).

The method for calculating permitted levels of the salt of aspartame-acesulfame is available at the bottom of this page.

www.wnho.net/how_aspartame_got_approved_in_england.htm
How aspartame gained approval in the US through the political chicanery of Don Rumsfeld is well known. Listen to Attorney Jim Turner explain how it was done. www.soundandfury.tv/pages/rumsfeld2.html Searle who was the original manufacturer, knew the FDA wanted them indicted for fraud. Therefore it had to be approved in another country before they could rubber stamp it around the world. What to do! There was no chance of getting it approved if the history was known. On January 10, 1977 Richard Merrill recommended to U. S. Attorney Sam Skinner that a grand jury investigate Searle for "apparent violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act 21 USC 331, (e), and the False Reports to the Government Act, 18 U.S.C.1001 for "their willful and knowing failure to make reports to the Food and Drug Administration required by the Act 21. U.S.C 355 (i) and for concealing material facts and making false statements to establish the safety of aspartame." The FDA calls special attention to studies investigating the effects of NutraSweet on monkeys and hamsters.

Aspartame was approved in England because G. D. Searle made a business deal with Paul Turner of the agency there. There was a big blowout in Parliament because of it but they didn't rescind the order. No studies were done in the UK. They relied on the U. S. FDA.

Who did the FDA rely on? On March 24, 1976 the FDA task force reported, "At the heart of the FDA's regulatory process is its ability to rely upon the integrity of the basic safety data submitted by sponsors of regulated products. Our investigation clearly demonstrates that, in the G. D. Searle Company, we have no basis for such reliance now." The Task force further says, "Some of our findings suggest an attitude of disregard for FDA's mission of protection of the public health by selectively reporting the results of studies in a manner which allays the concerns of questions of an FDA reviewer.

In a meeting with Food Standards in New Zealand last year it was finally admitted: "We relied on the FDA, no studies have been done here"? Clearly the FDA had to rely on studies reported to be "concealing material facts". Don Rumsfeld called in his "markers" to get it approved in the US. Yet, the aspartame manufacturers write "this is the most tested product in history" as consumers continue to become disabled or dying and the complaints never stop. As was reported in Congress, the FDA was so overwhelmed by the complaints from aspartame they actually referred the victims to the AIDS Hotline.

Read on below the famous Guardian article that exposed how aspartame became approved in England. Food Standards was setup to keep its distance from industry, yet this comment is made on Food Standards web site: . Monday 7 July 2008 "The Prime Minister has called for stronger partnerships between Government and the food services industry". Yet Food Standards was created specifically to distance the organization from the food services industry so decisions would be based on consumer safety and truth and not industry propaganda. The Food Standards web site is full of industry propaganda.

CHARITY LINKED TO MAKERS OF SUSPECT DRUG ASPARTAME CONTROVERSY
by Andrew Veltch Medical Correspondent (front page)

"Professor Paul Turner, head of the Government committee which approved the controversial artificial sweetener, aspartame, has an indirect link with its manufacturer, G. D. Searle.

Synthelabo, Searle's major partner in Europe, is behind the funding of Professor Turner's research at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London.

Professor Turner told the Guardian on Friday: "The Department of Health and Social security are aware of any commercial relationships I have, including my relationship with Synthelabo and the Charterhouse Unit. These were declared several years ago."

His research is funded by a charity called the Synthelabo Foundation, which receives it money from a limited company called the Charterhouse Clinical Research Unit. The share capital for that company was provided by Lers, a subsidiary of Synthelabo.

Studies have shown that aspartame would seriously damage some children.

Page 4 continued:

The head of the Government committee responsible for approving the controversial new artificial sweetener aspartame - sold as Canderel and NutraSweet - has an indirect but significant link with the manufacturers, G. D. Searle.

A charity set up by Professor Paul Turner, chairman of the toxicity committee, to fund his research at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, is backed by Searle's biggest partner in Europe, Synthelabo.

Chairman and members of expert committees which examine potentially hazardous substances are obliged to declare their commercial interests when they are appointed, and in practice, before each meeting. Although Professor Turner's interest may not qualify as a "commercial interest," senior members of the medical establishment consider it to be in the public interest for such matters to be declared.

The junior health minister, Mr. John Patten, wrote in a letter during the parliamentary row over aspartame in October that Professor Turner had never had any connections with Searle.

Professor Turner's charity is the Synthelabo Foundation, of which he is one of two trustees. The other is the vice-president in charge of research at Synthelabo. Professor Guiseppe Bartholini.

Searle and Synthelabo, the fourth biggest drugs company in France, have set up three joint companies in the last two years --one, called Lorex, in the UK last year.

Four years ago a Synthelabo subsidiary, Lers, provided the share capital to set up a limited company to fund Professor Turner's charity, the company is called the Charterhouse Clinical Research Unit.

Professor Turner is a consultant to Charterhouse, whose chairman, Mr. Paul Barclay, is the English lawyer for the Synthelabo group. The Charterhouse medical director, Dr. Steven Warrington, is an honorary lecturer in Professor Turner's pharmacology department at St. Bartholomew's.

Mr. Patten said in a letter to the Labour MP, Mr. Dale Campbell-Savours, in October: "Professor Turner has never had any connections with Searle, nor has he or anyone in his department been funded by them."

Professor Turner told the Guardian: "The Department of Health and Social Security is aware of any commercial relationships I have, including my relationship with Synthelabo and the Charterhouse Unit. These were declared several years ago."

Both aspartame and the partnership with Synthelabo are considered essential to Searle's survival, according to City analysts.

When the l983 results are in, they are likely to show that Searle's operating profits from drugs have "plunged by as much as 75 per cent," while profits from aspartame may have "more than quadrupled," according to the US brokers, Kidder Peabody. Searle is expected to sell nearly $600 million worth of aspartame worldwide this year.

The decline in Searle's drug business has been caused by a lack of new products. The Synthelabo connection gives Searle access to high-grade European research. The first joint company was Lorex, set up in the United States in l982. Lorex has since formed a Canadian subsidiary. The other two joint companies were set up last year -- one in Holland, the other in the UK.

Synthelabo, based in Paris and owned by the beauty firm L'Oreal (which is itself owned by Nestle) was until a few years ago a medium-sized company investing heavily in research.

The Searle deals form what is thought to be the largest single sector of am ambitious expansion programme that has made it the fourth biggest drugs firm in France. The Searle connection has given Synthelabo the status of an international company, as well as a new outlets, for its producers. Itis in Synthelabo's interests to ensure that Searle thrives.

Professor Turner and his colleague. Dr. Warrington, have worked on the development of Synthelabo's beta blocker, Betazolo. They have published several papers on the drug in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

Charterhouse was heavily criticized last month for paying unemployed people and students 250 lbs or more to act as guinea pigs in the first trials of a cancer drug, which, it was feared might itself promote the growth of certain tumours.

Professor Turner told the Guardian in a statement last month that Charterhouse was an independent company. Mr Barclay, the Charterhouse chairman, explained: "It was setup by Lers (Synthelabo's research subsidiary), it was their idea, and they subscribed the initial share capital. In l981 most of their interest was transferred to the charity. It was a way of having a research facility in England for them and for other pharmaceutical companies."

Professor Turner also told the Guardian last month that "any profits" from Charterhouse went to his charity. According to the last accounts filed by Charterhouse, in l982 the firm paid 10,131 lbs "under covenant to the trustees of Synthelabo Foundation. After this payment was made, the firm recorded a profit of 40,464 lbs. In l981, Charterhouse paid 5,294 lbs to the trustees.

Mr. Barclay explained: "The taxable profits went to the charity. They are the profits upon which, if they had not been covenanted in this way, tax would have to be paid."

The charity's file at the Charity Commissioner contains only one set of accounts (for l983). They have not been audited. The trustees are required by the Commission t file accounts every year. According to the unaudited l983 accounts, the charity received 15,425 (lbs) under covenant from Charterhouse and gave St. Bartholomew's Medical College 21,206 (lbs).

The two trustees, Professor Turner and Professor Bartholini, of Synthelabo, are empowered according to the charity's records, to use the money to fund research into clinical pharmacology and allied fields, for education and "for the relief of sickness" not necessarily at St. Bartholomew's. The trustees may, if they wish, invest the money.

The Guardian asked Professor Turner if he had been aware of the Searle/Synthelabo connection, and if so whether he considered it might have influenced his views on the products. He was also asked if he agreed that people in positions such as his had an ethical duty to declare their interests. He did not answer.

if aspartema was so bad i should be dead a couple times already.

if in doubt, drink nothing but water and youll be fine as far drinking stuff goes.

aspartame is the lesser evil to fizzydrinks.

lol'@the drama on this, compared to alcohol its a joke.

also, before anyone comes with the old "its bacteria excrement", oh well, you aware how many bacteria are in a humans body at any given time?

besides, aspartame is like a godsend for diabetic people

Did you even watch the vid, hada?

I hope you continue to be able "lol" at the effects this dangerous substance can have on people and that you yourself don't begin to suffer the ill effects of it.

I take your point re alcohol, but many people aren't as aware of the ill effects of this additive as they may be about alcohol.

This is a cool idea for a thread AbO it's a pet hate of mine and something I'm evangelical about this stuff should be band! And every manufacture that has used this product should be in court fighting off class actions globally. Anyone in health and food safety who isn't actively speaking out about this poisonous compound should be sacked.

Asda Settles Nasty Legal Spat With Ajinomoto Over Sweetener Aspartame Dnm Headline
Asda has settled its long-running legal dispute with ingredient supplier Ajinomoto out of court, FoodManufacture.co.uk has learnt, after the latter took legal action against the retailer for describing aspartame as a ‘nasty’ on own-label product packaging.
Multinational Ajinomoto told FoodManufacture.co.uk that it recently dropped a malicious falsehood claim against the retail giant, which it initially pursued via a High Court action in 2008, after Asda refused to alter wording on own-label product ranges that described the high-intensity sweetener as one of several ‘hidden nasties’.

Aspartame is a sugar substitute frequently used in products like diet sodas. It has been linked to brain cancer, memory loss, impaired vision, hearing loss, joint pain, asthma and the list continues.
For 16 years, the FDA refused to approve this best-selling sweetener aspartame, until a powerful politician finally got it legalized after calling in a favor. A three-year study confirmed a link between aspartame and cancer, but the FDA (food and drug administration) officials approved the toxic sweetener against the advice of their own scientists. www.wnho.net/whopper.htm

Aspartame Source Watch
The artificial sweetener aspartame (E951), marketed as NutraSweet, AminoSweet, Equal, Canderel, and now as a new modified, more concentrated and heat-resistant version called neotame (E961 — aspartame plus 3-di-methylbutyl,[1] which can be found on the EPA’s list of most hazardous chemicals), has been the subject of constant controversy since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. Critics point to the conflicts of interest that marred the FDA's approval of aspartame, the shoddy industry-funded research supporting its safety,[2][3][4] and point to independent research that shows numerous health risks associated with aspartame.

In 2008 I discovered I was unsuspectingly consuming methanol every day through the consumption of aspartame. I immediately stopped consuming anything containing aspartame and a range of small niggling medical conditions I had developed over the last 2 years, which I had put down to getting "old", immediately disappeared or were significantly improved. Should diabetic patients, in particular, be concerned about aspartame?

Let’s let the experts tell us if we should be concerned about aspartame and diabetes:

According to research conducted by H.J. Roberts, a diabetes specialist, a member of the ADA, and an authority on artificial sweeteners, Aspartame:

1) Leads to the precipitation of clinical diabetes.

2) Causes poorer diabetic control in diabetics on insulin or oral drugs.

3) Leads to the aggravation of diabetic complications such as retinopathy, cataracts, neuropathy and gastroparesis.

4) Causes convulsions.

In a statement concerning the use of products containing aspartame by persons with diabetes and hypoglycemia, Roberts says: "Unfortunately, many patients in my practice, and others seen in consultation, developed serious metabolic, neurological and other complications that could be specifically attributed to using Aspartame products.

This was evidenced by:

"The loss of diabetic control, the intensification of hypoglycemia, the occurrence of presumed 'insulin reactions' (including convulsions) that proved to be Aspartame reactions, and the precipitation, aggravation or simulation of diabetic complications (especially impaired vision and neuropathy) while using these products."

"Dramatic improvement of such features after avoiding Aspartame, and the prompt predictable recurrence of these problems when the patient resumed aspartame products."

Roberts goes on to say:

"I regret the failure of other physicians and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to sound appropriate warnings to patients and consumers based on these repeated findings which have been described in my corporate-neutral studies and publications."

Dr. Roberts realized Aspartame was a poison when it was approved because his diabetic patients began going blind, being confused and their blood sugar could not be controlled. He testified before Congress and in his first press conference said that if something was not done then in 5 or 10 years we would have a global plague on our hands. Indeed, it was Dr. Roberts who declared aspartame disease to be a global epidemic and published the 1038 page medical text on it: Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, neurosurgeon, and author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills stated that "excitotoxins such as that found in aspartame can precipitate diabetes in persons who are genetically susceptible to the disease."

Blaylock also states:

"With the public concern over childhood obesity and diabetes, few are being told of the overwhelming evidence that early exposure to excitotoxins (as found in aspartame) consistently produce gross obesity and insulin resistant diabetes, just as we are seeing in our youth."

Studies all over the world are linking the use of Aspartame not just to diabetes but also to brain tumors and leukemia.

An Italian Study (3 years) just recently released on Aspartame proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that aspartame is a carcinogen. It caused malignant brain tumors, leukemia and lymphoma. You can read the entire study on www.wnho.net ,click on aspartame.

That's the idea you're not supposed to notice when they change the name and if you check the label for aspartame you wouldn't see it in the list and think you good to go. They should be brought to book for changing the name to circumvent the bad publicity and growing public and medical reaction against this poison, being put in virtually all processed food and drink products.

Aspartame - The Silent Killer
Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All
physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a
diabetic. There are many cases where physicians
believe they have a patient with retinopathy, when in
fact, the problem is caused by Aspartame. The
Aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control,
causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately,
many diabetics who have used Aspartame have died.

Hmmm....

Yep :chuckle: I'm a bit of a weakling when it comes to iffy foods, I don't have a very good resistance to poison like Aspartame or even alcohol for that matter (which is the main reason I don't drink booze). I wouldn't be at all surprised if those migraines were caused by that crappy Aspartame in the fruit squash. I managed to get my mother off all artificial sweetners, she had been using them for ages as she's got type 2 Diabetes (so didn't want to use sugar) and she says she feels way better since she stopped using them  Coincidentally she also used to get excruciating migraines when using this stuff but hardly gets any headaches at all now.

The vid mentioned Stevia and the fact that the American authorities will not allow it to be classed as a 'sweetener'...for whatever reason. :coffee:
