Psst...I think I may have stumbled across a biggie.

I have suffered on and off with psoriasis on the hands and feet for the last eight years or so. Anyway, my diet has always been pretty crappy, mainly through lack of funds more than anything else.

Lately, I've stripped it right back to basics and once or twice a week, I've been treating myself to a nice piece of steak.

Long story short, this shit works! I'm trying to figure out what the magic ingredient is and so far I think I've narrowed it down to B6 and selenium in particular.

As ever, psoriasis treatments are fairly haphazard and nobody seems interested in doing any trials other than to prescribe creams n shit which ultimately do nowt. I always knew it was something to do with nutrition and diet but I stumbled across this by accident. I've managed to stave off an outbreak for almost a month but was skint this week and last so never got my meat fix.

Guess what happened...?

I doubt it was the addition of steak, more likely due to something the steak displaced, these conditions are often Gut mediated by Grains and/or Dairy, specifically the protein content.
Have a look at SCD and GAPS ( Specific Carbohydrate Diet / Gut and Psychology Syndrome) .

I did wonder about this and will check those out. Cheers.

I reckon it's deffo protein related in as much as I'm usually eating very little of it.

That SCD stuff sounds interesting actually.

I got a dose of TV round a mates recently, and they happened to be watching that Titmarsh fella. Anyway...he had some fatties on who had tried all these different diets and lost a shitload of weight and one of them had done something similar to eating pre-agricultural.

I've always said if you can't pick it or kill it yourself you shouldn't be eating it, but as already explained, stuff like meat is often too expensive for me, so I end up living on baked beans and bread.

Interesting stuff.

Beans and bread are probably the worst thing you could eat if it is gut related, I did GAPS, I had a number of autoimmune symptoms and major GI problems, I'm over a year in, all symptoms still decreasing, GI is working better than most people and I've put on over 3 stone while staying lean, ( i was underweight) . There are a couple of problems with GAPS though, she recommends dairy and most people can't handle it, I'd also avoid the fish oil, other than that it would be the first think I'd try for any auto-immune related problem. The intro diet is key though and it's pretty exclusive, you won't be eating out for a few months at the least.

What you came across on TV was probably "Paleo/Primal", which is similar in that it removes grains and legumes, there's a tendency toward low carb there though which can cause thyroid problems in the medium to long term.

Sleep is also key.

We're meant to eat a bit of meat now and then, if you think what a bit of steak can do is amazing you should see what liver does.

Aye, I can't manage liver though :conf: , I eat a lot of eggs instead which covers some of the same nutrients.

I believe it's actually 'Titchmarsh' but I find the above much more appealing. So I changed it.

Tried most of that and while some of it may ease outbreaks I was really wanting to get to the bottom of what is causing them. I hadn't noticed just how much diet actually effects it until recently so thought I'd share on here.

Well done, Abs! One of my nieces has suffered from it ever since she was a baby. In the past, I've whipped up a concoction with essential oils for her, and equipped her with dead sea salt to dissolve in her bath water, which are more effective than the prescribed medication. But, as you say, that's not sorting out the root cause.
