I've had Migraines since I was 15 and despite them being pretty nasty they haven't really been a worry until the last few weeks now they're coming one after another. Xmas day was crappy eating sarnies in the dark but instead of the usual disappearance for months they've been coming almost every day and it's getting really tedious.

I went to the Dr's on New Years Eve he gave me a full check up BP a wee bit high 140 over 80 but nothing special Heart a bit fast but ok reflexes fine etc etc. He told me that Migraines are a condition as opposed to just out of the blue headaches. I told him that I get aura's/halo's often without a headache but always discounted them as a bit of photo sensitivity but he said they are very relevent. I get a grey lumpy shape with psychedelic edges in the middle of my vision which make me "Blind" for 3-5 hours as I can only see things indirectly no matter how I swivel my eyes. But as all migraine sufferers know thats the nice part. It's the almighty headache sweats nausea and painful reaction to light that is the rotten part.

He prescribed me beta blockers and cocodamols (64/500) the beta blockers are to free up the bloodflow in your head in theory preventing the bottleneck of bloodflow that can trigger migraines. The coco's are pain relief. They were half working up until a few days ago and despite diligently taking the beta blockers I'm getting full migraines again.

We spoke about triggers the Dr said Chocolate can be a cause and yep definitely within 30 minutes of eating a few bit of chocolate the aura's start. I've also noticed milk isn't as bad but certainly plays a part as do onions. The biggest culprit is Bread. Or what crap passes for gluten these days. I haven't had pasta for ages so can't say but had a mixed grill early on today (sausage, egg, bacon, tomato, mushrooms) and I think the meal triggered it.

What am I missing? The migraines have always been sporadic until now none of the recent triggers have particularly affected me before. I've just had bloods taken to test the glucose to see if thats a problem but I don't think anything in my diet or life has particularly changed so what's causing it? I'm hoping on of you good people has a possible answer because the last few weeks have been crappy and I really don't want to face this carrying on for ages.

Are you finding yourself looking at screens for a long time, like PC monitor / laptop screen.

Do you drink coffee / other caffeine?

This next part sounds strange but coca cola tends to kill headaches and migranes for me when i (rarely) get them. :hahano:

Read this headacheandmigrainenews.com/coca-cola-and-migraine/

... and particularly the replies. Ive quoted one.

well I’m happy to report that coke does help stop a migraine attack. After years and years and years looking for treatments, including participating in a clinical trial, the one thing that has actually helped me is having 2-3 ounces of coke at the onset of a migraine. works every time! it is not magic…it is the combination of caffeine and sugar….btw…I’m a scientist….

Unless they all work for coke ofc. :hmm:

But it does seem to work. :chug: :yup:

The body loves magnesium and lots of alkaline water. If you have any of those twirly energy-star ligthbulbs, get rid of them.
And when in doubt, :hookah :psketti: :pass:

I find chocolate, cheese, monosodium glutamate and wine all aggravate my migraines... but the biggest one factor that helped was giving up smoking!

Cheese, as Miss Behaving mentioned can be a huge trigger as can wine, beer and spirits

From reading your post though I'd suggest going and getting your eyes tested if you haven't already. A change in vision is often a common cause of migraines. Migraines are not always accompanied by head pain, do you get disorted vision/aura's without the pain at times?

This can be caused by eyestrain, too much online time or playing computer games without giving your eyes a break or you may need glasses. Please get your eye checked

A sudden onslaught of migraines that differ from your usual pattern is unusual and needs checking. It is not uncommon but indicates something is not quite right

Betablockers make no sense in the treatment of migraines during an attack but they have been shown and are used successfully as a preventative measure.

Has your Dr asked you to take these before you have an attack? If not he should have.

Another trigger for migraines is stress and anxiety and betablockers help reduce both of these so if you take them and your migraines lessen your trigger maybe stress iyswim?

It's also worth asking him to give you Cyclizine or Meclozine ...this helps with the dizziness and sick feeling.

you can buy Migraleve tablets over the counter (they come in pink and yellow get a pack that has both) and are very effective and contain a antisemtic similiar to cyclizine and this makes a huge difference to most suffers

disclaimer: I am not a Dr or medically qualified just passing on info I learnt as a migraine sufferer and as a mum of a migraine sufferer

Hope you get it sorted soon, it can be done, I've not had a bad migraine for 17 years (touches wood)

paracetamol works well because you take it with water! the secret is the water! plenty of water!
the best way to take painkillers is to leave them on the table and just drink the water, as most headaches and migraines are caused by dehydration, it inhibits the bloods ability to carry oxygen as the O in H2O is in the water
I do hope it helps

Hi Baddoggydown, I get the sparkly/blindspot auras without the headache too! :(
It's creepy when people's faces in the distance suddenly begin to lose all their features. isn't it?! :O
Main triggers for me are when I am suddenly shocked into being awake from being in a deep sleep, so I wear earplugs at night. And the strobe-effect of energy-saving lightbulbs, so we have quite a collection of the old type stashed away. And strong scents, especially bloke deodorant spray. Yuk. And getting upset and weepy, or manic and not sleeping, are triggers for me too.
Best of luck with yours anyway, I hope a solution is found.
:)

Deffo the sugar, but ofc, you could also try eating more natural sugars like fruit (he says, attached to a Pepsi drip whilst typing).

I get the lights and stuff without the headaches too, but my thinking is that it isn't something to be fearful of. I will say no more on the subject, lest I be called a witch...again.
