NEW MEMORIAL AT AGECROFT TO BE UNVEILED

Saturday 27th July 12-2pm
Agecroft Road

Ex miners and their families will be unveiling a new Agecroft Colliery memorial next Saturday afternoon, with the whole community invited to attend.

Agecroft, opened in 1844, shut in 1990 and demolished in 1992, was Salford's last pit and the monument will include a small flower garden, an engraved stone and tiles made by children from St Augustine's Primary School. Besses Brass band will play at the ceremony.

The Aberfan disaster was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip in the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, on 21 October 1966, killing 116 children and 28 adults.. It was caused by a build-up of water in the accumulated rock and shale, which suddenly started to slide downhill in the form of slurry..The slide destroyed a farm and twenty terraced houses along Moy Road and slammed into the northern side of the Pantglas Junior School and part of the separate senior school, demolishing most of the structures and filling the classrooms with thick mud and rubble up to 10 metres (33 ft) deep.. Mud and water from the slide flooded many other houses in the vicinity, forcing many villagers to evacuate their homes...
Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song when they were sitting on a darkened staircase at Polydor Records following a power cut. The echo of the passing lift inspired them to imagine that they were trapped in a mine..According to the liner notes for their box-set Tales from the Brothers Gibb (1990), this song was inspired by the 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales...

This documentary looks at the period from 1984 miner's strike to the closure of Parkside Colliery the last pit in Lancashire in 1993..In a series of interviews, ex-miners and their wives talk about the financial and emotional pressure brought to bear on them by the strike...The closure of the mines is still a very emotive subject for many people but others look back and see it as a catalyst for positive change and improvement in their lives..This documentary focuses on how people have adjusted their lives in response to the decline of an important industry...
The Lancashire Coalfield in North West England was one of the most important British coalfields.. Its coal seams were formed from the "vegetation of tropical swampy forests" in the Carboniferous period over 300 million years ago..The Gassy" coal seams, poor ventilation and the use of candles meant the coalfield was prone to explosions and, between 1851 and 1853, had the highest mortality rate of any British coafield. In 1850, 16 men and boys died at Bent Grange Colliery in Oldham, 36 died at Coppull Colliery in 1852 and in 2 disasters within a year at Ince Hall Colliery, 58 died in 1853 and 89 men died in 1854..Mining was dangerous, flooding, gases, roof falls and explosions of firedamp contributed to the deaths of thousands of workers in Lancashire's pits. In the 1st half of the 19th century there were many disasters, many caused by firedamp and inadequate ventilation. In the year 1859 there were 68 fatal accidents in Manchester district and 57 in Wigan and St Helens.. Had this strange dream the other month Oi before you posted that Picture of your old fella and neph..Yeah I was going down a Pit shaft with a guy in a White Pit helmet..Just like your old fellas..Kindna spooky dream..Early caving enthusiasts, not yet having the advantage of light-weight electrical illumination, introduced the carbide lamp to their hobby.. While increasingly replaced by more modern choices, a substantial percentage of cavers still use this method..In cave surveys, carbide lamps are favoured for the lead or "point" surveyor, who must identify suitable points in the cave to designate as survey stations...
