John Fletcher of Bolton, a member of a family with mining interests, came to Atherton in 1768 to sink 2 shafts.. Ralph Fletcher was part-owner in the Ladyshore Colliery.. The pits developed and Fletcher, Burrows and Company's Atherton Collieries was formed in 1870, owing all the coalmines in the town. Howe Bridge Colliery employed 460 men in 1954.. In 1908 the Howe Bridge Mines Rescue Station opened on Lovers Lane. It was the first mines rescue station in Lancashire..A school and mission opened at Howe Bridge in the Atherton parish in 1869. St Michael and All Angels Church was built in 1877 as a result of the late Victorian urbanisation which occurred when the small settlement on the road from Atherton to Leigh became a pit village when deep mining began at Howe Bridge Colliery.. The church was designed by Paley and Austin of Lancaster, and the £7,000 cost was given by John Fletcher...

AGECROFT MEMORIAL GARDEN DEDICATION AND MINERS REUNION

Last July, hundreds of people flocked to the former site of Agecroft Colliery for the unveiling of a monument for those who worked, were injured or died at the Salford pit. On April 26th, there's going to be the dedication of the memorial garden at the base of the monument, followed by a reunion of former Agecroft miners at the Swinton Royal Legion.

Agecroft Colliery ceased production in 1990 and was the last pit in the Irwell Valley. Over the last year there have been timely events to commemorate those who worked, were injured or died at the Salford colliery.

Last July hundreds of people attended the unveiling of a monument in an emotional ceremony (see previous Salford Star article – click here), while in September there was a week long exhibition at St Augustine's Church, aka the Miners' Cathedral, together with films, oral histories and the launch of The Last Pit In The Valley book by former miner Paul Kelly (see here and see here).

April 26th will see the dedication of a Memorial Garden at the base of the monument which will be blessed by Canon Wyatt from Salford, with traditional mining music by the North Ashton Prize Band from Wigan and the Salford MAPAS Community Choir.

A plaque will be also be unveiled, revealing the names of all those who died at Agecroft Colliery in pursuit of the nation's coal, and there will be a ceremonial planting of two rose bushes in memory those who died whilst working at the mine.

Later in the evening, a reunion of Agecroft miners is being held at the Swinton Royal British Legion and all former Colliery employees, their families and friends are invited to attend.
