The Manchester tart is a traditional English baked tart, which consists of a shortcrust pastry shell, spread with raspberry jam, covered with a custard filling and topped with flakes of coconut and a Maraschino cherry. One variation of the original recipe includes slices of banana underneath the custard with the jam.

A staple on school dinner menus until the mid 1980s, the original Manchester Tart is a variation on an earlier recipe, the Manchester Pudding, which was first recorded by the Victorian cookery writer, Mrs Beeton.[1]
Manchester Tart 1 1

It was still served in Salford primary schools some 8 years ago, i doubt that it still doesn't do the rounds, as well as coloured custard :chuckle:

Is the banana addition a Salford thing(what with it being the exotic bit) because I assumed it was a standard until I googled it.

I'm Shouting Langworthy R'd Primary 2004, and the dinner lady that cooked it was Salford Lancashire, would spit before saying Manchester, and she told me this is how you make the fecking tart, no sodding bananas

Never seen this tart before but the banana hybrid sounds good!

Best we got in south Yorkshire or Humberside as it was then was pink custard and chocolate sponge and tbh 6 yr olds dont need much more. :chuckle:

Although the plain sponge with jam and coconut topping was pretty special as well!! :)

Used to enjoy going camping with cubs and scouts as the mother of the scout leader made the most wicked treacle tart with crumble on as well, i know a lot of the boys used to go camping just for the tart lol.

I like jam on puddings but thats as fruity as it gets, I think cooking fruit (other than making jam) is the 11th sin and should not be tolerated anywhere in the universe. For claritys sake uncooked fruit on puddings is tolerable but not to be rejoiced over other than at a banoffee pie festival. I am stoutly anti cherry on top when it comes to bakewell tart, this info needs to go on my CV asap!!! :killinme:

I have just stewed some apples, (+ a loose pear), added cinnamon, ginger and then covered it in crumble mix with a little demerara sugar on top.

You may sue at will. :)

You can get steamed sponge puddings in cans...treacle - which is a mysnomer, as it's actually golden syrup which isn't the same as treacle at all - jam or chocolate. But I don't know of any canned cakes.

Don't confuse Batou, don't try to explain anything, just say "yes, of course we do". He'll be happy , and so will we all
