Anyway, just off to stretch myself - would hate to think my poor, harassed man would have to strain himself, putting any effort into it, after a hard day of sitting on his arse being waited on! And it would be inconsiderate to get the GP to have to get his hymen scissors out!

Some of these things go a bit beyond being dated and chauvinistic into the downright disturbing and dangerous! "Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. You don't really need to be a genius to see the potential problems with that!

I do think, though, that there's a halfway house between those attitudes, and where we are today where everyone works their arse off, it's just taken for granted that you need two incomes to survive, every measure of our collective psychological health indicates that it's declining, and we all know what's happening to our economic circumstances. If you went back to 1955 (sounds like an idea for a film...) they were all being told that technology would lead to the human race living in a utopia, and we'd barely need to work. Didn't quite work out that way, did it?

I think the two are separate. Dual incomes are a pragmatic response to a decline in real wages and increasing financial demands that evolved of necessity irrespective of whether women are allowed to leave the house for purposes other than shopping and coffee mornings.

Some people where one party does have a large paypacket do indeed still have one of them staying at home to look after the kids, do the hoovering and perhaps shag the milkman if they still have one. All that should have happened is a choice as to who works and who stays at home. It was inevitable women would start working more anyway - they ran the fucking country during WWII while all the blokes were shooting at each other.

The shit thing is he way two incomes has become so normalised. It kinda happened and nobody notices. In the same way everyone seems to have forgotten further education used to be free. Soon we'll be forgetting poor people got legal aid and disabled people once claimed benefits.
