At midsummers, you should say "hyvää juhannusta". Or then just say "Hyvää Ukon juhlaa". That would be the very old tradition. :oldfart: Joulu = christmas/midwinter. Haha. :larf:

Tomorrow night I will prepare special midsummer sauna, drink and eat a lot, burn huge "kokko" fire, I will do spells and raise a toast for Ukko and Sanctum zone. :woot:

There's a cool reasoning for drinking and eating a lot at midsummersnight, it's all done in honour of Ukko,(He's the highest god of Finnish folklore, controls weathers, thunder and stuff, cool bloke with a hammer) he will then bless people with good fortune, high crop yields and such. And people believe the more you eat and drink, more you get blessed by doing so. :D

Man, that is so awesome! I wanna go! :hypo:  :drunk:

Sounds like a really cool holiday! If it were in America it would be totally commercialized(the more shopping you do, the more blessed you will be  ). Thanks for sharing your customs; I love other cultures and I never learned about any traditions from your neck of the woods.

Have a great time! I look forward to reading about this Ukko celebration.

What kinda food do y'all prepare?*recipes? :yup: )*

Hei All, I'm back home... Just arrived. Thanks for your replies! I try to answer them now.

Mikey! Ok, sounds cool, how did you like Kalevala? In english it's quite weird, old poetic Finnish is so hard to translate to english, it's nearly impossible to get the same expressions into it. (I've read some parts of the English version.) Haha, D&D had Mielikki in it? She's wife of Tapio, they are the gods of forest. Finnish gods always come as pairs, almost every time there's god and goddess for same thing. interesting thing is that Bear and Moose for example are also foest gods, but Tapio & Mielikki are the ones who sort of over watch everything in forest, Mielikki is the creator of bear btw, our band has a song about that, the creation of bear. Yes, Tolkien got a ton of influences from Finnish myths.

Hei Oi and Merc, shrooms you say? In shamanic tradition, yea, but normal peeps, no, just alcohol and food. :D And there's a lot of fertility rites involved, most of those are not really practiced any more, but there's lot of knowledge about it. Just like most of all ancient tradition here.

Oh, not many pictures though, we forgot about using cameras, just took some pics of our dog etc. :emb:

K-bone, haha, yea, I'm sure of that! It's partially commercialized here, beer discounts and stuff just before midsummer. But it's not that bad as christmas is... Not even close.

Funny thing is, that these pagan holidays are still celebrated, the church has not killed all of it here. I guess the the tradition of certain things sits deep in people. Although most of them don't even know why we celebrate mid summer and to which god it's dedicated to... It's celebration of Ukko and the main things it aims, is to get good yield of crops, plenty of food, happy and wealthy year all in all. It's also very popular time for people to get married.

And christmas has over written the ancient midwinters party... About midwinter, I don't know so much about, the traditions I mean. One main thing is to get the spring to come soon, it's the party of light, sort of summoning the sun to light up the darkness of winter. :D

Anyway, I had nice time... It was quite peaceful, I drank a lot and ate a lot, we made old fashion "rosvopaisti" that's a primitive meat food thing. First burn a big fire, then dig a hole, put the meats in there, cover them with sand and stuff, and then burn fire on top of it for some hours. I went to sauna every night, I also swam too... Water was at +14 degrees, not very warm yet.

We didn't have our own kokko fire this year, but we watched neighbors light up theirs... Drinking was so much fun that I forgot about almost all spells... :D I did give an offering to Ahti though, gave him some booze. Hehe. Ahti is god of waters and of all cretures who live in waters. O gave him an offering to have luck with fishing. ;)

Ok, this is a long pot already, I'll drop back here, I want to read all the new topics.

WB Hex, I didn't mean magics as such, was more a general question. I've got to know 2 Norwegians in my puff and both (when in Norway) went mushroom picking as though it was as matter of fact as doing the shopping.

Hmm.. Yea. Well, people here get lot of foods(those who are not too lazy for it!) from forest, picking mushrooms, berries and stuff is very normal thing to do. And at late summer, forests are full of stuff to eat. :D Fishing and hunting are also very popular as both passtime and making a living... This is so backwards and old fashioned country, some of old habits sit tight! And i find it very good thing.. Too bad many young folks are not so interested in all this.

Picking shroom and berries is damn easy way to get free food. And it's legal too, in almost anywhere. ;)

Hei Batou!

We sure do, at new years eve.... Too bad only once in year. hehe, well, some people use explosive stuff to make their midsummers fire a bit more interesting experience. :chuckle: One of our neighbors lights the fire with different means each year... Once it was fireworks, other time he used some explosive, once it was can of gasolene and what have you.

It is fun! :D And thanks for your input...

You do that, you'll find that Ukko(and other Finnish gods) have a close reseblance to to Scandinavian gods, Ukko for example shares many traits with Odin and Thor, he's god of thinder also, has a hammer and what not, it's very close to Norse mythology.

Also an important figure in Finnish tradition is ofcourse Väinämöinen, he's also interesting character you might wish to get to know.. He's sort of demigod/wizard type of guy.

I forgot to say thanks again, cos i am very interested in all 'gods' that people think are real. Yours at least sound more fun to their populations. I wonder if they really truly believe in them, tho. If they believe good stuff, then its good. if they believe they 'gods' are bad, then maybe they will fulfill their own bad thoughts.

amazing stuff, loved reading this thread, and i do love to read about all these gods and why people really truly believe in them. fascinating thread. ty xxx

Hmm, about most Finnish gods, I can say they are quite "human" in a way... They are usually not entirely good/evil, but have both sides in them. Many are like men, if you're in good terms with them, they are nice and might reward you, if you piss them off, bevare, they will smite ye! :yinyan:

Well, to be hinest, if I would believe in gods as they're traditionally viewed, my gods and goddesses would definitely be the old Finnish ones. I like them, because they're so "forgiving" in a way, very much like humans with good and bad sides, still mighty with various powers, but very human. I like that. ;)
