Hello all,

Your advice appreciated. I've been offered some work that would require me to be vaccinated but I'm hesitant. Otherwise the job sounds like a pretty good match.

I promised myself I'd never get vaccinated again, unless I know everything about what they were putting into me. Fact is, Hep B looks nasty and I'm really struggling with it.

At the interview I was told in no uncertain terms that I would not be able to commence work without this vaccination due to the nature of the work.

Any ideas?

I'm fairly sure this is illegal, actually. Nobody know anything?

Which Hep B vaccine do they want you do get?

Here is ingredient lists for the different kinds (you can look up each ingredient by itself to find out what it is):
Hib/Hep B (Comvax)
Synthetic or semisynthetic, yeast or yeast extract, Amino Acids, Aluminum Hydroxyphosphate Sulfate, Dextrose, Formaldehyde or Formalin, Mineral Salts, Sodium Borate, Soy Peptone, Yeast Protein
Hep B (Engerix-B), Hepatitis B vaccine
Yeast or yeast extract, Aluminum Hydroxide, Phosphate Buffers, Thimerosal (another name for mercury) Yeast Protein
Hep B (Recombivax), Hepatitis B vaccine
Yeast or yeast extract, Aluminum Hydroxyphosphate Sulfate, Amino Acids, Dextrose, Formaldehyde or Formalin, Mineral Salts, Potassium Aluminum Sulfate, Soy Peptone, Yeast Protein
HepA/HepB vaccine (Twinrix)
Human diploid tissue culture (MRC-5), yeast or yeast extract, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Phosphate, Amino Acids, Dextrose, Formaldehyde or Formalin, Inorganic Salts, MRC-5 Cellular Protein, Neomycin Sulfate, 2-Phenoxyethanol, Phosphate Buffers, Polysorbate 20, TWINRIX does not contain Thimerosal

As for the work part of it... not sure if it is illegal to force the vaccine on people or not as I am not familiar with the regulations there. However, where I am at, I could claim religious, philosophical, or even medical reasons for not getting it, and if an employee denied me work based on my beliefs and refusal to get the vaccine it could be potential discrimination based on beliefs.
It's basically are you willing to get the above vaccine for the work or not, and if you're not can you claim any of the exemptions in which they cannot discriminate against. Look into your local laws to see if there is a way around it.

I have had the Hep B jab (3 set) at 16... I had a minor reaction to it which resulted in redness, swelling, and I still have a bump on my arm where they stuck me with it. Besides that I have not noticed anything that could be tied to that particular vaccine.
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood
and I have no problem with going out the same way

As far as I'm aware Hep B is carried in bodily fluids and can be transmitted by intimate sexual contact, blood (blood tranfusions, sharing drug needles, coming into contact with a carriers bodily fluids, if you have a cut where it enter your system)

As long as you're not planning on shagging people or shooting up with them, or becoming a vampire and drinking their blood, I think you'd be well your rights to refuse the vaccine.

When you think about it logically, doctors and nurses are not routinely vaccinted againest Hep B and they deal with people bleeding all over the place, spitting on them, dribbling on them every day of the week.

I would imagine the potential employer is just covering their back, so in the highly unlikely event you 'contracted' Hep B you wouldn't be able to sue them as they had vaccinated you prior to you working for them.

I'm no expert on this but if you want the position I'm sure you could arrange with them to sign a disclaimer something along the lines of 'you are aware of the risks but don't want the vaccine'

If you are the right person for the job I'm guessing they would welcome your honesty

Wishing you luck for your new job x

Thanks Dawny! xxx

I will be working in a clinical environment, hence the jab. I'll have to look into it further as I thought that most medical staff were routinely vaccinated these days.

And thanks Stars. I did get a jab years ago now but have nothing to prove it as was via a GUM unit, one of those walk-in things. Not sure how I'd go about getting evidence for that, tbh.

I won't know what variation they want me to get until closer to the time. Thanks for info though.

Would this be an ongoing thing abs?

If it was a one shot deal (no pun intended) and i was in the same situation, i would be more likely to go ahead with it.

I think its a long shot but you might wanna try looking into the GUM clinic again and seeing if you can get proof you've had it. It works on a number system there doesn't it? Your name and details will STILL be on file in there somewhere. Worth checking out.

And did they ask you if you'd already had the shot or is it a standard requirement even if someone had had the shot recently? ... because that wouldn't make sense?

Happy now ya fucker? :gleek:

I think it'd just be the once but apparently healthcare workers and such require boosters.

Can you accept the post, and THEN later on tell them that you dont wish to take up the offer of a vaccination ? Sometimes they make it SOUND as though you MUST have the vaccination, so that you take it up, but if you choose not to take it up, then maybe they will just say "ok". Maybe you could even say that you have already had one in the last year - Are they able to check ?

I would do this but they pretty much said i couldn't work until I had it done or could prove Ive already had it. They want to do it themselves, apparently.

If its one jab id probably just take it to get the job, even though most here wont agree.

that being said i would prefer no jabs if i had a choice.

I think a chance at a job like this isnt so easy to get tbh abs, imho. Beats manual labour and shit.
