Hmmm...

I think being educated is being literate, and numerate. Having a large vocabulary and good grammar, being proficient at mathematics...I think these things help one to do well in the system.

The idea is the more educated you are, the better your career.

I don't know really, am I educated? I hardly went to school. i suppose I'm somewhat self educated. I enjoyed reading as a kid.

So yeah...I think education is just a means of churning out slaves for the system. A factory worker is a slave, but so is a lawer, one is far better paid than the other though.

I conclude that education is a system slave conveyor belt, try to be the best slave you can :D

Actually I didn't conclude that, I've read what others have said about the education system being a slave factory, and a lot of it resonated with me and makes sense.

I don't know but I intend to find out?

Not necessarily...not these days.

A degree becomes meaningless when every tom dick & harry has one. A degree in sociology or a driving licence....guess which is more likely to get you a job.

G'day Rick.

In today's societal structure, to be educated means that you have been indoctrinated. Basically, you have been taught to repeat preselected answers to fill into blank spaces on a test paper to be marked so that it can be determined whether or not you are a good repeater.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

Yes and no.

For instance, I don't require the experience of jumping off the top of a 20 storey building to 'learn' that the consequence is not something that I am likely to enjoy.

Education is instrumental. It's anything that serves a legitimate purpose for you, that benefits you, and that ultimately results in a good outcome for you. If you're learning something and you don't get any of these three things from it, then it's a waste of time, and you're ultimately doing it for someone else's benefit, not your own.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

That doesn't hold water for me or in my experience. I have read stuff about many different subjects which I have little experience of to a highly proficient level. Armed with that knowledge and understanding the principles and reasons why certain things are done in the way they are done allows you to achieve things without being experienced in other fields.

For example some server administration knowledge allows web developers to understand aspects of the system environment with out being experienced in server administrators.

Understanding is the key to education and that is what modern schooling doesn't provide for the most part. If schools taught people how to learn and understand things people would be far better equipped to educate themselves, for life and not just while at school passing exams or for a particular job roll.

People can be experienced in something and still have little real understanding of what they are doing. Computer programming would be a good example of that. I know people who can write programs and would be considered experienced programmers. I also know people who understand computers, who are programmers in multiple languages who make experienced programmers look like complete novices. The difference is they come up with totally unique solutions to problems because they can take unconventional routes to find solutions to problems. The reason they can do that is because they understand how and why things work, they are experienced and they are prepared to experiment with new concepts - reeducating and gaining experience is an on going process. If someone says to them you can't do that the first question they ask is why not and often they find a solution.

Understanding, experience, curiosity, motivation, imagination and determination etc. all contribute to education which is an ongoing process.

Educated means that you have been taught that which they want you to know. Education is different to learning for yourself. Of course that is perhaps a semantic debate(wait is a semantic debate going back to jewish hoaxes? lolz)

I also wish to add that money does not make you smarter and being smarter does not always make you more money. There are plenty of smart people with no money and shit jobs. On the flip side to that there are plenty of college graduates are idiots.

This is of course opinion but really what else is there?
