How do they make grapes seedless and was the point of that really just to make them easier to eat?

Good question! I would have thought it was some kind of genetic modification but according to this website, they are natural and have been around for quite some time.

I've noticed that they seem to be getting bigger, like they used to be, in supermarkets and such and this piqued my interest!

Thanks k.

Of course, it's not to say they aren't GM...sucks that we can't even trust our food! :aargh: I need a farm!

Oh, also, I read that seedless are less nutritious because the seed holds some many nutrients and antioxidants.

That's probably very true. Nature wouldn't have put them there to be digested if there wasn't some benefit, I s'pose?

I know there is some really beneficial stuff in apple seeds.

I think eating fruit type seeds would be bad for your stomach and stick in your intestines, but sunflower seeds without the shells may be healthy

That would make sense. I guess there is always grape seed extract...I wouldn't want to crunch up grape seeds in my mouth anyway! :)

The the core of an apple is my favourite bit. Full of lovely laetrile, you have to chew them well though, to break the seeds up so your gut can extract the good stuff.

The horse's bollocks, surely?

In fact, it's probably full of bollocks, every conceivable kind. Much like our own dear sketti.

the crunchier the better.. the soft treats probably do have too much horse nuts. stuff like milkbone is like a cookie. some dry dogfood is a medley of flavors that dance across the palette. the smell leaves much to be desired, failing to ignite the Pavlovian response expected, but the texture is sublime. like crisp leaves on a cool autumn morning. a hint of cracked pepper and sea salt completes the dish.

Sometimes trees and hence their fruit come out naturally with differences, its a bit of natures fluke. If these different fruits are then cultivated by grafting then the new plants can have the same characteristics, including the fruit.

Other examples of this are stonefruit, and olives...on what i call domesticated varieties/cultivars, the seed obtainted from them if planted grows to be a 'wild' variety, quite different to the tree it came off....for example if you plant a seed from an almond it wont be the same as the tree it came off, it will revert back to the original variety. Most almonds and other stonefruit, and olives, that are consumed by humans, are created from grafting or clones/cuttings from a mother plant, not from seeds. The seeds from the mother plant dont grow to have the same characteristics, they revert back to the 'wild' variety almost all the time.

Quite bizarre when you think about it, but makes a bit of sense considering that people have been selecting and propagating fruits with desirable traits for thousands of years.

I havent heard of GM modified grapes being planted tbh, there are a lot of vineyards around me and most of them are classic european varieties, of which there are many.

Seedless grapes have been available since at least the 1970s, long before GM crops started to come on the market, so I think selective breeding is a likelier origin. I see that your link says they are actually sultanas, which I guess does make sense.

It was only really in the late seventies that green grapes were readily available in seedless varieties. Red seedless grapes are a much more recent introduction and have a totally different taste and texture to the traditional varieties. The choice of varieties containing seeds has been removed from the consumer. The same thing has also been happening to oranges and grapefruits the seeds of which are hardly even an issue. Many seedless oranges seem to have a strange cell structure around the stalk region. Selective breeding and grafting may well be the method used in the majority of cases, but I doubt genetics manipulation is absent in all cases or used as a catalyst to accelerate or instigate some of the characteristics changed in some produce.
