3D printing has been used to create running shoes, medical implants, and, to the delight of firearm enthusiasts, a .22 caliber handgun. So why not a 3D-printed steak for the grill?

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel's philanthropic foundation plans to announce today a six-figure grant for bioprinted meat, part of an ambitious plan to bring to the world's dinner tables a set of technologies originally developed for creating medical-grade tissues.

The recipient of the Thiel Foundation's grant, a Columbia, Mo.-based startup named Modern Meadow, is pitching bioprinted meat as a more environmentally-friendly way to satisfy a natural human craving for animal protein. Co-founder Andras Forgacs has sharply criticized the overall cost of traditional livestock practices, saying "if you look at the resource intensity of everything that goes into a hamburger, it is an environmental train wreck."

"Modern Meadow is combining regenerative medicine with 3D printing to imagine an economic and compassionate solution to a global problem," said Lindy Fishburne, executive director of Breakout Labs, a project of the Thiel Foundation. "We hope our support will help propel them through the early stage of their development, so they can turn their inspired vision into reality." (See CNET's Q&A with Thiel from last year.)

We're omnivores.
Humans cannot get by on meat alone any more than they can get by on veg without being careful about their diet.
If you have to go to such lengths as to be so careful as to get the right range of food to stay vegan for example it should tell you something.

It is possible to have a purely vegan diet and it can be quite healthy but it is not something done without the modern convenience of varied food in shops and information about good diet.

i am guessing because it was a good source of food back in the day and became habit - i myself be a lacto vegetarian - have been for 30 odd years - can't stand the taste or texture of meat - only problem i have with people eating meat is in the way in which we rear animals - i think if we are gonna eat em we should at least give them a good quality of life and as quick and fear free death as possible.

This isn't actually a factual statement. There are examples of vegans prior to "modern convenience of varied food in shops and information about good diet". Jainism and Buddhism are easy to check examples of this that date back thousands of years. The Essene sect is another.


By the way, while it is stated that the followers of Jainism are vegetarian, they are actually vegan. In fact, they go way further than vegans do and won't even eat certain plant foods, such as root vegetables.

i love plants so much that i try to keep the animal population down.

Scarcity caused it initially imo from a human perspective. Since, it's been an almost intrinsic addiction.
I just can't get my head around eating the inside of dead animals. It just seems so weird to me. Primitive really.
