Don't panic!! The fake aliens aren't here yet...

Since a few weeks before the Olympics, I've been noticing what I can only describe as some kind of sonic boom (I know it probably isn't, but those are the first words that enter my head when I try and think of a way to describe this noise) in the skies.

It's happened three or four times so far, and each time I've not been able to see anything in the sky from where it sounds like the noise is coming from.

It's definitely coming from 'up' though, if that makes any sense at all?

Any idea what could be causing this?

Cheers.

Each time I've noticed it, it has been daylight so far.

We had loud booms over Leamington a month or so back, so disturbingly loud that the police and fire services were inundated with hundreds of calls about potential explosions and crashes being heard - and it turned out they were sonic booms. The Air Force were putting some of their beloved war planes through their paces.

Twonks.

No, nobody around here (or in Coventry and Rugby) saw planes either. Hence all the worried calls to the emergency services about explosions and crashes being heard. The planes are too high and too fast to see, I would think; and by the time you actually hear the sonic boom, the planes are long gone anyway.

Interesting that this occurred during daylight hours. Sonic booms do sound likely. I also wonder if it may be cloud seeding practices? There are different methods of doing this. One happens to be the use of specially designed munitions shells outfitted with potassium or silver iodide, dry ice, and different types of dense carbon. If I'm not mistaken, China did this with the Beijing games.

Another possibility could be some sort of solar-related event. When solar winds hit the atmosphere of Earth, it does create some interesting harmonics. It creates infrasonic pulses, usually on ranges beyond our ability to hear. Very rarely they can be heard at ground level. What you're describing sounds a little too frequent though, Ab. You never know though.

Maybe they're having a sly practice for a 91 gun salute while somebody was kept in a quiet ward up at Balmoral.

Just sayin'

There've been strange sounds from the sky reported all around the world quite a lot over the last year or 2. Some, like the sonic boom type sound you described, & some like the one on the link.

I was keeping track of them for a bit earlier this year.

Some were definite hoaxes, where the recording of one of the first Youtube clips had just been copied with a new bit of film (as determined by folk who had audio equipment to investigate such things). Others, I think, were genuine - such as cases where 90+ people in a particular locality reported the noises to the police & no explanation was found as to the cause.

On other forums, lots of people from all over the globe were adamant they'd personally heard these sound. Some will have been mistaken or lying, but I doubt they all were.

Cheers, Gilly. What I've been hearing is nowhere near as sinister sounding as those ones. I would not be standing there filming if I heard those fekkers.

:nilly:

So, I mentioned it made me think of an aircraft noise, like a sonic boom. I said this because there is quite a loud bang, usually followed by a hissing sound, a bit like a firework. It almost sounds as if whatever is causing the bang is suddenly having to deal with some tremendous resistance, hence the hissing that follows (opposed to hiss then bang, as with fireworks). I've also only heard it in daylight so far. I live quite near the airport so naturally, I'm expecting to see a plane above me, but there is nothing when it happens. I'd assume, if they had anything to do with the airport, they'd be low enough that I could see 'em, coming into land and all.

:dunno:
