G'day Rick.
It's a defense mechanism stemming from a lack of self-worth.
Superiority complex is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person's feelings of superiority counter or conceal his or her feelings of inferiority.

I agree. And the more arrogant or "superior" they are, the more of a deep seated problem they have with real Self Esteem - hence their dependency on what they have and how it's presented supposedly telling us "who they are"; and their dislike of others with less/badly maintained "things" being too close, in case others associate them with it too.
I don't like them, but they don't bother me. They can't get to the Real Me to bother.
My parents brought us up to know that we were The Same As Monarchs And No Different From Beggars.
I remember as a child, this girl coming round to play with us and she had a new doll - which she shoved at us all the time to show us how new and beautiful it was and how much better than any of our dolls. Irritated, I told my mum, and she told me, "Let her have her moment of being as good as the rest of you. The child is only showing off because she's never had anything before". Which was true.
Some people never lose that and will only ever feel as good as you think their house/garden/car is.
