In a free democratic country you should be able to look at other peoples details such as criminal records,bank statements,how much they owe in loans etc.

I don't think that level of information needs to be available to people at an individual level in their normal daily business. Why would someone require information about you if you never intended to deal with that person?

I do however think it should be the case for people in public office who are supposed to be working on our behalf. Camoron and every other member of Parliament should have their mobiles hooked up to GPS tracking systems. We should know where they are and who they are there with at all times while they are working for us. Their bank and business details should be open to public inspection while they hold office including at least 5 years following their retirement plus an additional 25 years by an independent board on behalf of the public - which would flag anything of public interest. If they have nothing to hide they should have nothing to fear!

A place I used to work at banned mobile phones from the office - you'd to stash 'em in a locker in the staff break room. They started picking out people at random & doing a bag & pocket check to make sure you'd not smuggled your phone in.

When I was picked out & told them it was in my car, they expected me to show them inside my car. I told them they could check my bag & locker, but my car wasn't parked on company property,so its contents was none of their business. One of the managers said, "I don't mind letting people look in my car because I've nothing to hide". I replied that I had something to hide - my privacy.

He parped on for a bit repeating crud about having nothing to hide, till he got right on my nerves. I told him a check on my locker / bag would prove I didn't have my mobile with me, and that's all he needed to f'ing know.

It's just a matter of principle. Don't ever let the nosey bastards encroach on your privacy.

Even though my life is fairly uneventful and there are no skeletons in my cupboards or "bodies under the floor-boards", I'd still hate for everyone to know my business and I don't want to know theirs - especially when it come to things like medical records; mine are pretty sensitive (and extensive!).

But why! Why would you wont to look at someones details? As it currently is, it is not a free and democratic society and I doubt there will ever be.

Knowing every bit of detail about a person leads to a misconceptions about the individual, also if you dont fit into a 'box' people think your strange.

For instance I dont own a mobile phone and when I get asked, " Whats your mobile number". " Dont have one". There is a stunned silence it takes a second for it to compute, then the obligatory, " But, but !? ".

interesting question. a few things that came to mind when i thought about it as i could not come up with a straight yes or no reply.

why is it that we don't want others to know certain information about us? is it because of what they will do with that info? is it the misconceptions that may arise? is it because we may feel bad if others knew the true extent of our circumstances whether it be feeling lesser for having less or guilty for having too much? would we ever be able to escape our pasts if it were available for all to see?

if everyone could see everything would we be more responsible?

the flip side as boots said is why would we want to? nosiness? to make assumptions? would it be enough to know or would we feel the need to 'do' something with the information?

does knowing that a registered sex offender living near you make you a better parent? or just more paranoid? what about those who dont live near you but may be a risk? would knowing be 'enough' or would you feel that they should be removed from the area? what chance is there for that person to change if that is the label all those around them associate with them? same applies to any criminal record.

its labels again - labels we can put on people due to having information - rich, poor, shop lifter, debtor,

to an extent i agree with frog that those who put themselves up for public office should have far less privacy then the 'ordinary' individual - for they should be under more scrutiny and more accountable whilst in a position of power and of 'service' to the people they represent.

Yes,it would bother me. The right to privacy is one of the big ones.

It might be interesting to consider the other side of this question: If you could, would you choose to look at someone elses medical,criminal,bank,etc, records?

In my case, no I wouldn't. Mainly out of respect for their privacy, but also because I don't believe we can judge a person's character on those things, and yet seeing them may lead to opinions and assumptions being formed whether we consciously do so or not.
