silent letters as is in

pterodactyl

gnome

island

listen

is there a point to these silent letters or do they exist solely to mess with my head?

In addition to this please stop reinventing the pronounciation of words .....It's Ur Anus, not UR IN Is, Bode eh see A , not bod i ca and Car a be in , not Car rib e in ..

Thank you

maybe they just work like accents and shit in those other languages?

Well I am no expert but here is my attempt at answering your questions regarding silent letters. In some cases the letters are remnant from the words original origin. In the same way that when people say hello now they often drop the H. I also think that in some cases the letter effects how you say the other letters around it but it is too early for me to think of an example. Hopefully this helps. Remember language evolves over time which is why it is hard to understand Shakespeare.

Good question! Sometimes I think it is to make words more distinguished looking. :study: But I like what I-Baster just stated and it may have to do with the old English origins. Prolly some are derivatives of other languages like Latin and Greek.

I love words and studying languages, so I find this subject fascinating.

English is a proper hot-pot of most European languages tbf.
Actually even 'English' should really be 'Anglish'.

Yeah, u r write 2 :D

Text speak, that is another kind of writing that annoys me, I have had to use good old 'google' to find out what some of it means.

Some people would text and then ask me why I never replied, I would say, "probably because I couldn't make head or tail of it, after all, I am a grown adult, I am not fuckin 12".

^ :D What gender are you Silvershine? I was just curious as most men seem to have a problem admitting details like that.
