The article does make a distinction between biodegrade and photodegrade.

It does make complete sense that microbes would not recognise the plastic as food so would not even attempt to break it down.

This talk of environmental concern by the stores / govt is pretence.

1) They could make biodegradable plastic bags for store use if they wanted to. I once bought a small compost bin for the kitchen, which came complete with biodegradable, plasticy type lining bags. You just transfer the contents, lining and all, to the outdoor composter when full.

2). Cardboard boxes are biodegradable, and Kwik Save used to supply the ones they'd received stock in for their customers to transport their shopping to car & home. This was very convenient. Now they've closed down, and the other stores (around here anyway) don't do it. Why not?

We re-use Bags for Life until they fall apart (incidentally, I do wonder how "life" is defined in this instance! They're certainly not designed to see me or the OH out)! I hate to see discarded plastic bags blighting the countryside. IMHO it would be a good idea if stores charged for plastic bags, say 5p or so. Hopefully that would make many people think ahead and bring their own!
