Personally, I find it a little sinister that such would need to be worked into legislation (and has been so easily, apparently) only after stores tried and failed to do it themselves not so long ago in the UK.

I do keep and reuse mine.
The throwing away of plastics is something which concerns me quite a bit.
They take far too long to degrade and are already entering the foodchain.

I've put yes, BUT that's only providing they replace them with the kind of heavy-duty, biodegradable ones that I saw the likes of Cagney & Lacy typically using in America, a great many years ago.

How would you feel about getting caught short and having to pay for a new bag to carry the shopping that you've also just scanned yourself home in?

Actually, ordering online is even better when it comes to preserving peoples jobs.
With Tesco for instance, (My son used to work with them), I know that my order is printed out, a staff member has to go around the store picking my goods and scanning them through a till. Then another employee has to drive the van and deliver them to me.
I sit on my ass and save two jobs.
If I go to the store, I do all the lifting, scan them myself, then cart them home. Negating those two jobs.

I save and re-use mine, take em back to Asda or Tesco, even though you can look a bit odd carrying empty crumpled carrier bags around...

Tell you what can be fun though...take your old Asda bags to Tesco and vise-versa...cop the looks you get in-store...

Seriously though, the answer is simply for supermarkets to charge for their carrier bags, say 5p or perhaps 10p. And then the food would be a bit cheaper too wouldn't it?

Many plastics fall apart in strong sunlight much faster than some people claim. In australia for example, plastic shopping bags begin to disintegrate within a year and become white powder...heck HDPE plastic begins to fall apart out here, and i am talking the 44 gallon drums made to hold chemicals etc. and IBC's . I have plenty of experience in witnessing this. they begin to turn to powder, become brittle and eventually crumble and crack etc.

so shopping bags dont last long out here at all if left in the sun.

Sometimes bags containing products left outside simply fall apart when one has forgotten about them and goes to retrieve them months later...the sun seems to be the catalyst here, not time...keep the plastic in the dark and it is a different story.

Im not saying that the plastic powder that results is a good thing though btw...im looking at that as a seperate issue...it wouldnt be very organic i suspect and who knows what effects it has on organisms down the track...but on the bags themselves not breaking down "for a thousand years" or some other claims i have read in the media...I call BS!
