I had this interesting one sided conversation about science fiction books with a guy, he was like a walking encyclopedia on science fiction, and except for the Lord of the Rings I was not very knowledgeable.

So what are some good science fiction books, and who are the best authors, my particular interest may be the space type stories more than fantasy, but I would like to hear about all the books you like.

Hey Rick,

Most of the sci-fi I read tends to be the oldies.
Robert Heinlein
Isaac Asimov
HG Wells
Jules Verne

Bio Of A Space Tyrant by Piers Anthony is pretty good and like Arthur C Clarke's books in that you get a pretty good explanation of the physics involved with life in space.

I highly recommend Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Fast paced and violent with a really cool central character as well.
Oh, and Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks is really good.

I read Rendevous With Rama a few years ago but not the others in the series. I've always found him to be really good at explaining the reality of being in space but lacking the story telling abilities to keep you gripped.

Loved his telly show as well. :cool:

I read all Jules Verne & H G Wells books when I was 10, so was given a boxed set of John Wyndham books for my 11th birthday, which were ace.

These included...

The Day of the Triffids
The Midwich Cukoos
Chocky
The Kraken's Wake
Trouble with Lichen
The Chrysalids
(and another one that I don't remember).

By far and away the best for me is the Dune series by Frank Herbert. :thumbup:

Actually, I couldn't recommend them enough. I'll put it this way, if the Dune series was recommended reading for 'conspiracy theorists', then I'd doubt very much that we would have such ridiculous ideas floating around, such as 4th dimensional, blood-drinking, human sacrificing, shape-shifting, reptilians beaming a 'matrix' down from their moon space ship, let alone people believing in such ridiculous ideas ... of course, that wouldn't stop some people. ;)

What surprised me was how much the film stuck to the story in the book. Normally film adaptations have little more than their names in common with the books they are 'based on'.

Yes indeed - when I was preggers, I kept dreaming about small blonde children with golden eyes, even though I hadn't read the book or seen the film in many years. :D

Luckily my small blonde children both had blue eyes.

I share your contempt for remakes.
