Having known a couple of people who speak Chinese, I think the answer is that the Chinese vocabulary is quite a lot smaller than English, and many words sound very similar, so if you were to say something that sounded approximately Chinese you would be quite close to a real word. So, for example, if you watch the Olympics table tennis tournament, you get fascinating match-ups between Li Jung Wong and Ji Lung Wang. Whereas Texas sounds nothing like McDonald's, and English is also a composite of words comprised from many different languages, whereas I don't think Chinese is, so if a Chinese person just tried to make something up in English it's much less likely to sound like a real word.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

Surely in these days of movies music and internet most Chinese people know some English and most English and American people know some Chinese. Also I would expect people to be better informed regarding blue hair. It is cool to have. I had blue hair once and everybody thought it was over spray since I am a painter.

Like I said somewhere on this thread or another one.. my birth father was Greek (dark hair and brown eyes with eastern look) and birth mother was from Scottish decent. I was born in London and we moved to East Anglia in the 70s. I had a hard time at the schools fitting in with the locals and my cocky London accent must have sounded strange to them as did their twangy Suffolk accent to me. Over the years I started to understand their sayings, idioms and expressions. But that didn't stop the bullying and hence me growing up with a rebellious nature. I think I'm over it now.
If I could be a little serious for one moment I would like to know how to deal with a co worker who is very much a Nationalist and a known member of the NF, BNP and possibly ELD. In a passing comment the other day he said to me "Oh, here comes another Immigrant" (joking?) I pretended not to hear his comment and just carried on talking to another co worker, but it has bothered me some what, which is why I have bought it up here. I know this thread is very light and just a bit of fun about accents, but I could do with a little help in dealing with this guy.
Thanks.
*edit* I know.. probably taking myself too seriously :chuckle:

The block hates you cuz he probably can't take his thoughts and eye's away from, foreign looking women, and maybe, is a paid up member of black beauties etc etc. He's just jealous that he's pigeon holed him-self, and knows you obviously haven't due to having slightly foreign looks. So how i'd deal with him would be, yeah yeah yeah, and moving on :coffee:

Maybe have a word with your line manager. If it was a one off ignorant comment, it's not such a big deal, but if it appears to be his intention to try to intimidate you as a matter of course with such comments, don't let him get away with any shit.

Diarise his bullying - date / time / who was present & within ear-shot / what was said, and the manner (i.e. tone of voice & facial expressions indicated it was meant aggressively or derisively as opposed to tongue in cheek humour). Don't rise to the bait by tackling him directly, but pass it to your manager with a request that procedures are initiated to put a stop to it.

You shouldn't have to endure anyone's nasty bigotry in the work place, and companies are obliged to deal with it.

Thanks and that's pretty much what I've done all my adult life or I could have smacked someone.
Cheers for that ;)

*edit* Maybe I should start a thread on how do deal with 'bigots' ?

Thanks.. that was another thing to do, or my next stage if he keeps it up. He makes about one or two comments a year, depending who he is with to back up his foul mouth. You can see it in his look and just what's going on his brain. Very strange if your on the receiving end.

he puts you down in front of his friend to make you feel bad and make himself as the leader. maybe humiliate him by drawing attention to his pathetic alpha display in front of his friends so you can achieve dominance and make him wear a dress while calling you sir. its very simple social animal behavior. as kipling said in the jungle book "he who wears the dress is the bitch."

There is a small town in northern Arizona, Camp Verde, that has about 10,000 people and they all speak with a Texas accent. I asked someone there if a lot of Texans had moved to Camp Verde and he said "Naw s'only cuz we're a bunch of hicks". But, how did they all end up speaking like that? I guess it's because they are kind of isolated and some of the earlier settlers were from Texas, and since not many peopled moved in or out over the course of a couple hundred years, they learned to talk like that. But how did Texans and southerners get that drawl? I think it's because of the hot weather and peopled started speaking slower.

For an idea of how we might sound to a foreigner, try listening to this video at @15 seconds on:
