Yes, I use the word traditional to describing an upside down tree. Long before Albert made christmas trees popular with all the decorations and presents, people used to cut down a small pine sapling/tree and bring it into their homes and hung it upside down tied to the beams near to a source of heat. They did this over the winter months for health reasons. The heat would encourage the trees to give off their wonderful pine smells which would help combat any bronchial/lunng infections.

So, not for any misconceived pagan/druidic reasons, I put our dual purpose tree upside down. I wanted to get away from the 'commercialism' of christmas and do things the traditional way as much as I could. The tree was the best tree we have ever had as far as I am concerned. The decorations hung freely instead of catching on branches in the normal way. I used straw decorations interspersed with some black baubles....NO TINSEL!

As an advantage there was a lot more room under the tree for the commercial prezzies!
Last year as my son and I were spending christmas with our daughters/sisters who are at uni, we decided not to put the tree up and just put out some ornaments instead......and jolly nice that looked too.

That's interesting, Angel - never heard about the trees being hung upside down traditionally. When I used to have a real fire instead of gas, I used to put some drops of oil (rosemary & orange together was my favourite) on the logs & leave it to soak in well before burning them - I like the scent of pine too, so I bet that's good.

We still haven't put our tree up...I'm not bothered though, I liked Christmas more years ago when I was a kid and a teen.
I think it's less of an event these days...maybe due to the entitlement of spoilt little bastards What I mean is, they seem to get enough stuff given to them all throughout the year, so getting stuff at Christmas isn't such a big deal for them, they're just expecting to be given a bit more. Greedy little fuckers don't know they're born!

Has anyone been on the receiving end of bizarre Xmas presents?

Not that I'm trying to be ungrateful (much ) but I've had a few over the years.

When I first got together with th'usband, his mother asked me what I wanted. Because I didn't want her spending much, I said I'd like some talc. (That was before I heard it was carcinogenic, before anyone starts! ).

However, I didn't know that it was her policy to pay the same amount for everyone's presents. She treated us all differently (some with contempt, others with reverence, sweetness or unwarranted aggression) but spent the same amount of money on everyone, so as not to show favouritism.

I therefore was flabbergasted to receive approximately 15 tons of talcum powder.

When our kids were smaller, my brothers & sister & myself used to compete to buy each other's off-spring the most noisy, annoying, mess-making toys we could possibly find. That was fun.

I'm getting in the holiday spirit...

When I was a kid, my sis's grandparents gave us all a little faux leather case, and when we unzipped it to unearth the mystery inside, we discovered a nail file, a pair of nail clippers, and I think a small oblong mirror

One year for my birthday, from the same grandparents, I got a set of ornamental brass cannons and tie clips and cufflinks...I was about 13 or 14.

They used to bring down a kick ass home made Chrismas fruit cake though...that made up for the presents

When I was little money was tight in our house. One year my parents gave me an empty shoe box and told me it was an Action Man deserter.

Gilly ..bizarre Christmas presents....my ex husband who was my husband at the time, bought me an in car cd player, when a) I didn't drive and b) didn't have have a car

oh and Gilly my potential mother in law sent the presents and they were good and thoughtful for her son and my son ....and I got sent a sent a dressing gown that was size 20 when I'm a 12 ........she made her feelings clear........
