And then there's the controversial topic of ZPE. As I understand it, current laws of physics say it's impossble to harness it. The field is already at the minimum state of energy and therefore you can't extract any energy from it. However, this argument relies on such things as the renormalisation of nasty infinity. Rendering the energy of the vacuum finite. Whereas in truth that renormalisation is only done as a mathematical convenience. There is high probability that the vacuum has infinite energy potential and therefore can be tapped into.
The current model which as you say relies on fossil fuels and fission and involves first material being mined, then transported, then having the energy released, then converted, then sent vast distances down inefficient cables is just daft.
Reading that reminded me of David Bohm.
According to our current understanding of physics, every region of space is awash with different kinds of fields composed of waves of varying lengths. Each wave always has at least some energy. When physicists calculate the minimum amount of energy a wave can possess, they find that every cubic centimeter of empty space contains more energy than the total energy of all the matter in the known universe!
We are surrounded by energy but, like you pointed out, harnessing that power is beyond our means.
