What do you think of swearing? Is it a low and vulgar way of speaking? Or a great form of self expression?
Do you swear?
There is a time and place for swearing I think...you wouldn't swear your arse off at a job interview for instance :D
Swearing covers a range of emotions too, it can be aggressive, humourous, etc etc.

So, what the fuck do you bunch of bastards think of swearing? :D

(Apologies if this place has had a swearing thread before...it's hardly an original thread anyway :chuckle: )

its just words to express something. i dont think it should offend anyone. people act like their senses are reeling if they hear a fuck or a cunt. like its dirty words... i dont get it. words are words. sticks and stones and all that. theres politeness, and civility, and you dont want your kids to be shitting and fucking every other word since its kind of a lazy way to express yourself. that would maybe be my only problem with it. its a short cut to explain feelings. fuck you is an expression of anger. but what are you really angry about? its not expressed. just the anger of it is there's nothing behind it, except rage.. i guess it doesn't get to the root of the problem.
but a simple fuck off never hurt anyone so fuck you mr wolf you fuckin shit.

Excellent topic.

It could be a local area related thing as for the amount of cussing people do
And actually brought into a conversation as regular words to describe stronger emotions and opinions on one thing or the other,

EXAMPLE.... like when some person cuts you off in traffic the word bastard is just a response or release of your emotions , words actually don't have no ability to destroy one physically they get used to control or intimidate another emotionally, that's how bullies instill fear by words of threat cussing words mostly, and to express ones intentions or attitude toward a more submissive that they think won't react back, a invisible weapon so to speak in a way.

But I think mainly it's become part of our normal vocabulary in modern times

Get fucked bat :D

I don't think I've ever been offended by being called a cunt, etc. I've been angered, and have responded in kind. It kind of hurts sometimes if someone close to you calls you a cunt or something.

It's like on the tv when someone accidently says fuck or something, and the presenters go all apologetic, and it's treated as some kind of moral outrage, and the person who swore is made out to be a bastard, like they've just killed someone. That offends me, that someone is made to feel like that on tv because they said a word.
The news shows dead bodies and war torn countries, and all kinds of death and destruction, that's fine, just don't say fuck, or show your nipple at the superbowl.

A lot of truth in that statement and many have died because of it.

sometimes swear words impart exactly the tone and essence of what you want to say in the most succinct and understandable manner - at others they can show a distinct lack of imagination and vocabulary.
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.

Swearing has been scientifically proven to reduce pain when you hurt yourself by accident. The speed at which the pain subsides is in direct correlation to the severity of the swear words and the amount used.

Is that true? That's quite surprising but makes sense :D
But, how long has swearing been around? Did some bloke thousands of years ago scream "OWW YOU COMPLETE TWAT OF A FUCK!!!" when he stubbed his toe on a rock? :chuckle: I wonder when swearing was invented.

Intriguing.

I've had a couple of people over the years say things like, "Will you kindly stop swearing, I find it offensive". But it was when we were having a row, and the only reason I was swearing was because I wished to be offensive. Daft tw@s! :D

I put the development of swearing and swear words down to religion. If you think about it virtually every swear word is related to sex, and I think they're considered crude or offensive because of the prurient attitude that has been taken to sex until very recently, largely due to religious reasons. I think you would find that in a society in which religion still plays a significant and often state-approved role - Islamic countries would come to mind - then you will still find that swearing is a lot more taboo than it is in the fucking shithole of a cunt-ry that we live in.

You've got me  with that WUB, is there a non-sexual swear word?

The only one I can think of is 'bloody' which is pretty mild. 'Bastard' perhaps not strictly sexual, although it's obviously sexually-related. I think you'll struggle apart from that because I think the origin is, as I say, related to prurient attitudes to sex. If you think about it, even saying 'sex' in 'polite society' will get a reaction, and 'vagina' is positively blasphemous. Even swear words that lose some of their currency like 'bugger' or 'sod' still have a sexual origin.

Edit: 'Damn' could be another possible mild one, although that proves the point because it's religion-related. I think you'll struggle to name a genuinely offensive swear word that isn't related to sex.
