I occasionally get a weird sensation in one foot that stops me from getting to sleep - like a cross between an acute tickle (deep though - not on the surface skin) & a pain in a particular spot. I'll refer to this map next time to try & work out if it's an indication of some problem with one of my tripes or something.

I suppose there is a knack to it but any attention to the area is better than none. You are looking to find small 'deposits' like a rock of salt or sand, and trying to break it down as this represents the blockage in the area. Try doing someone elses shoulder areas with your thumb to easily find what these 'deposits' feel like.
