I don't get why there's anything sinister about asking for contact details. Particularly back in the day when the people were trying to build a 'truth movement' - it's standard to try to keep in touch, tell people what's going on and try to build some kind of community around the issue. I think it would be far weirder if there was no effort to build some kind of contact list.
Anarchists have my contact details. They send me e-mails that tell me about stuff that's happening like local protests. It's pretty handy. I'd have thought they were pretty shit anarchists if they weren't interested in making contact with like minded people and keeping in touch.
I think people should give out at least e-mail addresses (don't even have to give your real name) with gay abandon if they're interested in something. What can MI5 or whoever do about it? They can't whisk you off to a foreign torture chamber for being interested in stuff (unless you're a Muslim maybe). Being frightened of letting anyone know you're interested in something is just the politics of fear and isolates people. If you believe in something, let like minded people know, get together with them and do something about it. Unless you're engaged in illegal stuff, I think flaunting your identity to the public online is far riskier than somebody sticking you on a mailing list about some particular cause.
I think both Shayler and Machon have had their importance inflated by the mere fact they worked for MI5 - they weren't exactly James Bond and Pussy Galore. It's a bit like that nob Nick Pope pitching himself as Fox Mulder. Annie Machon is just all a bit

MI5 never needed to do anything about the truth movement - it destroyed itself. I may have come to a personal conclusion 911 was not an inside job, but I still think the truth movement was at its core emblematic of something pretty good - people not accepting something at face value and trying to find out about it for themselves. But it destroyed itself well enough by people retreating to paranoid little camps and spending more time slagging each other off than the official story.
