It's mostly in .jpg format but can often be in .png .gif and a few other formats.

png (Portable Network Graphics) files are good for minimising detail loss or images with transparent elements.

Gif (Graphics Interchange Format) files are best used for animated objects and compromise quality to keep the filesize down.

BMP ( Bitmap) files can be high quality but most graphics programa allow you to set a compression factor in order to optimise the filesize v's image quality. So take nothing for granted.
