Citizens of other EU countries can however just waltz into the UK and claim benefits without any such requirements.

I said all EU citizens have the same right of residency is all. Local welfare systems obviously vary. A brit CAN receive some welfare payments in SOME of the EU states, you'll want to investigate it though and look up the various differences.
Ireland for example is no problem at all, they'll issue you with a national insurance number and stuff like child benefit the very few weeks after you're there. The basic jist is to have a job first and show registration for tax et voila, sorted.

& to be fair, benefits are relevant to the thread subject, as being able to claim them immediately in a foreign country (or not) can affect a persons ability to make a successful move abroad....indeed it can make all the difference between success and failure in those crucial first few months.

AFAIK the core thing to have is just enough NI credits in each country to qualify for benefits, simple as.
If you have half a brain then you get a job or go with enough savings to get kicked off I suppose.
If I can do it, or mikey or oi or whatever then anyone can.
