Yeah you win, well done andyh, you've defended conspiracies theory logic valiantly, now I will stop refreshing the page to read nonsense I've personally heard from you a thousand times and wait hopefully for space bandit to answer my questions.

Facts not theories.
I don't want to hear about little green men, lizards, moon people, y2k or alex jones screaming about the russians invading and then trying on the side to sell off some berkeley water filters and perhaps some back garden nuclear bomb shelters and a 3yr supply of MRE's :)
I'm just as pissed at that particular type of conspiracy nonsense as you are.

People need to do all sorts of things, question is do they NEED money to do it?

Wether we like it or not we all need money. Money pays for electricity, food, roof over your families head etc. I would love to be able to give up money but if i did i would be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. :)

There you go again with the NEED.

Only humans 'need' money. Only modern ones at that.
What we are really saying is that we don't love and care for each other so we 'need' tokens to 'buy' the co-operation of others and most of the tokens are hoarded by the very same ones that issue it...and we think thats OK :)

So we don't love and care for each other but we let the ones least deserving of any co-operation handle the tokens for the co-operation.

Personally I think human evolution stopped a long time ago :D

Ok just point me to a link where you explain the relevance of a promissory note.

It's an empty promise.
Take it to the bank & ask them to redeem it for the value it signifies... as the promissory note states it will.
That's a stupid thing to do, a bank is not a gold merchant :) edit: it doesn't sell anything, it has nothing to sell you, it might offer you change or something equivalent to the amount you present?

A bank is a saving deposit utility, they call this high street banking, it gives banks assets which you get a minute share of with interest rates, you go into a bank and withdraw a £20 note which you can use to exchange for anything, how is that an empty promise?
If you buy £20 worth of silver, the person who sold you the silver can go and use that £20 to go buy bread and chicken or put it towards a Berkey water filter, how is it an empty promise?

You can give them an account card for a deposit enter a pin and they give you £20, where is the empty promise, you deposit money, they keep it safe, is that not the purpose of a bank, not to give you the bank tellers jewelry?

You miss the point.
Where is the value in the money if there is nothing to back it up?

The only reply you can give is that the value it has is the insane belief that millions of people have :)
)

Exactly.
It's a promise that doesn't exist so how at all is it valid?

It's a promise that does exist, in paper form.

Here are a few clues again, just in case there's any confusion.

Promise2g

Promise

www.royalmint.com/aboutus/policies-and-g...al-tender-guidelines
Legal tender has a very narrow and technical meaning in the settlement of debts. It means that a debtor cannot successfully be sued for non-payment if he pays into court in legal tender. It does not mean that any ordinary transaction has to take place in legal tender or only within the amount denominated by the legislation. Both parties are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes. In order to comply with the very strict rules governing an actual legal tender it is necessary, for example, actually to offer the exact amount due because no change can be demanded.

Why would a central authority wish to control the printing of money, and then instill the notion in society that this is the sole unit of exchange, even though this isn't even the case legally?

The answer should be obvious.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

I don't think I've ever met anyone in my entire life who believes exchange transactions have to be legally completed with money. Though I admit it's not something I routinely ask.

Go out into the street now, ask people at random "what is legal tender in Britain?", report back to us on what the answers are.

You're right Andy. But I think we "need" money in the sense we all "need" it to get by I'm fairly confident you don't ask your customers to simply give you big hug and accept that as payment in full or send your electricity supplier a basketfull of happy thoughts.

We don't "need" it in the broad sense that it's a primitive idea that encourages all kinds of negative human traits and we'd function far better as a society without it. That goes for barter too of course.

That's begging the question though. They'll say £ sterling - because the newsagent won't accept Rupees or shillings.

I've yet to see anyone express astonishment they can part exchange their car without being arrested.
