No.
Gold retains exactly the same value, the money does not ;)

Thats the thing though. He's came to the conclusion that the moneys going to go tits up so wants something to fall back on. Not a huge amount, just abit.

I see.
Heres the problem, if the money goes tits up so does the gold :)

In such a scenario bog roll will have more value, soap, food, water.

When a monetary system fails the most valuable thing of all is land, specifically fertile land and the means to defend it...

If the economy goes to hell in a handbasket what are people going to trade?
Gold?

I don't think so :)

Perhaps in the first day or two yes.
After that things will quickly snowball.

Gold only has value for either jewellery or electronics. Neither of which will matter a damn in such a situation.
What he has to consider is how such a scenario will develop and rapidly progress.
If there is no-one manning the power stations then electricity fails, if electricity fails then the water mains isn't pumped, if there's no pumps then there's no water, if there's no mains water then there's a f*cking serious problem on your hands.

14 days of such a thing is all it would take for some serious decimation to take hold.
Don't take my word for it btw lol.
Us westerners are particularly vulnerable in that regard, many people in 3rd world countries live with that every single day. We're just not cut out for it. The most vulnerable would die within a few weeks, we're talking millions here.
The most ruthless would become the new emerging power. The current crowd would run for the bunkers :D

The UK has quite a large population of ruthless bastards in a small area. As you can see, gold would rapidly have little value.

You can't convince people by just telling them about this btw, they can visit somalia if they want a taste of it.

A mate of mine has a similar idea.
he reckons the money is gonna crash massively & when it does he'll still be able to rely trading the gold & silver that he's bought.
But how many people are gonna trade in gold & silver after a massive collapse? & all he has are bits of paper saying he owns it anyway... which is likely to vanish come a financial meltdown. Who's gonna be bothered to honour it & pay for it to be transported to him when money has become worthless?
In the meantime though, if he cashed in now he'd have made a decent tidy profit.

Post-Harris/early-DIF days someone on there told me to put my money into gold. That was when gold was relatively cheap, about £5 a gallon or something. Had I heeded that advice, I'd be fookin' loaded now because the price of gold has rocketed since then. I doubt those gains are there to be made now.

Sketts, just get him an easter egg, they usually have gold coloured wrapping, or some chocolate Krugerands.

And I always blame Gilly :)

:conf: I can't think what I posted about gold trading. But I expect the whatever the situation is in that particular market, it will probably be my fault. :P

My sister's bought some sovereigns over the years as an investment, but I've no idea what she paid for them, or what their current worth is. I bought a sovereign ring for my husband for his 40th (10 years ago - the coin was minted the year he was born) which cost about £100, and have seen similarly aged ones in what look to be much lighter weight & less ornate settings recently at £600+, so yes, investing some time ago would have borne fruit.

Often with jewellery, dealers will only offer you scrap value by weight, whereas you could attract a much better price on Ebay.

Buy up loads of bread!
There will always be demand for it , the price increases annually and never drops.
See? ...

Oct 2002 - 57p
Oct 2003 - 60p
Oct 2004 - 65p
Oct 2005 - 75p
Oct 2006 - 83p
Oct 2007 - 91p
Oct 2008 - £1.26
Oct 2009 - £1.21
Oct 2010 - £1.20
Oct 2011 - £1.19
Oct 2012 - £1.26

So a loaf bought for 57p in 2002 would be a rock solid item today.

Its just inflation.
Note that wages have not more than doubled since 2002 but food and fuel certainly has and its always been that way.
Despite this 'recession' prices still remain as high as ever and wages remain as crap as ever.
More and more money at the top, less and less at the bottom.

The only way to win is to obtain goods at below normal value to sell at a profit and the easiest way to do that is stuff like drugs, smuggled booze/tobacco, arms etc. Whatever is restricted is profitable, you can thank the govt for creating that little situation ofc :D

Whose thread are we derailing? Oh, it's just Andy's, so that's OK.

Yes, she thrives on strife, so she should be thanking me. :)

The job's quite good thanks - but health isn't so good lately, so fatigued & constant migraine, which is why I've not contributed as much nonsense here as usual. Those symptoms are always particularly useful when you're learning 13 computer systems 500 SLA's & 10,000 'mandatory processes'.
