I've met someone who perpetrated a sexual offence against a minor (not sure exactly what, just know they did something)
He has learning difficulties. Don't know full background, suspect something about upbringing or failure to understand stuff about sexuality.
People worked with the guy.
He's never done anything again, no suspicions, no accusations - it's been years.
He's really good hearted.
I think like many things it's not always clear cut.
I obviously don't know for sure but I expect his learning difficulties play a part in what happened and what you've said proves that there are indeed exceptions to the rule.
However, the kind of people I'm refering to are the ones that can be proven beyond doubt that they commited crimes and continued to commit crimes. Same as the ones who go to prison and apparently are 'rehabilitated' into being a normal person again, let back out into the community, and go on to commit their atrocities yet again.
These are the people I'm refering to in this thread and these are the people that best hope they never meet people like me in real life.
The justice system systematically fails the victims. Who's going to protect kids if the system doesn't?
I know I'm starting to sound like some kind of serial pedo slasher but I'm not

AFAIK the LD were key.
I've actually met several sex offenders over the years. But working with that stuff is very specialist so I've never got into what they've done in detail.
I prefer to see it as a continuum. Jimmy Saville appears to have been a knowing, calculating abuser. Perhaps beyond redemption. I wouldn't complain if you dug him up, cut his rotting knackers off and made them into a small leather purse.
Other people I do know have been very successfully rehabilitated. I don't know much about the programmes they use, but I do know they do stuff like teach people techniques to stop themselves when they feel tempted. I think that motivation is the key. You can't really help what you find sexy. It must be awful if you just can't help being attracted to kids. If you're a bit kinky you can't help being a bit kinky, but it isn't going to hurt anyone if it's between consenting adults. Pedos can't do what their desire tells them to without harming someone. And some of them have had disturbed upbringings, maybe been abused themselves. I think we need to give people the chance to deal with it. People need to be able to go to their GP and say
look doc, I just can't help fancying kids. Give me bromide if you like, just help me deal with it without fear of persecution. Pedos who are willing to acknowledge they should not act out their desires can and are helped to cope with their feelings.
It is those that choose to be predatory and reject any efforts to help them overcome their sexual urges that I think cross the line and need to be prevented by any form of society.
Additionally, a fair few offenders tend to quite young. I think if you can nip that shit in the bud, there's a reasonable chance of success. It doesn't show the actual manual, but here's the contents page of the programme they use with adolescents to give you an idea. I know of people it has worked with and have not re-offended after some kind of incident (like maybe being caught looking at child porn or inappropriate touching or something) alerted people.

There are also other dynamics. For example those who groom teenagers for sexual exploitation tend not to be pedophiles in the sense that they are not attracted to young children. Instead they are seeking to control and manipulate post pubescent individuals for their own ends. I can't see that they're really any better.
