Corrupt detective pretended to be hitman threatening to have himself killed
A CORRUPT detective who offered to plant a shotgun in someone's car, faked a legal form and sparked a major alert by pretending to be a hitman and threatening to have himself killed has been jailed for four years.
Ex-cop Daniel Withnell, aged 31, cried as he was jailed today for a catalogue of crimes he committed while employed by Greater Manchester Police.
His crimes included sending an anonymous text message to a colleague pretending to be a hitman who was threatening to have him killed.
He also drafted a false legal document which he e-mailed to a man being investigated by police in an attempt to get money out of him.
Barbara Webster, prosecuting, told Manchester Crown Court that he received £19,000 from Claire Smethurst, an escort, on the understanding he would plant a shotgun in her ex-partner’s car.
He received the money in October last year.
Smethurst had a change of heart the following day and told Withnell, of Cranark Close, Heaton, that she did not want to go through with the arrangement.
She also told a police officer, who then informed his superiors.
When he was arrested weeks later he denied any involvement, claiming he had met with her to discuss the selling of a tanning salon.
The cash was later returned by Withnell.
His actions were said to be "fantasy" and would not have been carried out.
While Withnell was on bail, Det Sgt Graham Cummings raised the alarm after receiving an anonymous text message claiming Withnell would be shot in Cawdor Street, Farnworth, on March 16 at 10pm.
Ms Webster said the threat was believed to be genuine and police drafted out three sergeants, 20 police officers and two armed response vehicles to "flood" Cawdor Street.
Withnell was tracked by worried officers and issued with a "threat to life warning" and offered help.
Within days it became clear the text message had been sent by the defendant because CCTV captured him buying a phone that was later used to send the text message.
He was arrested and confessed to sending the text, claiming he feared for his life.
Withnell was also found to be accessing police databases to get information about a man called Robert Sandford.
Mr Sandford had been arrested after cash totalling £495,000 was found in his Bolton home.
Withnell then drafted a false legal form claiming Mr Sandford was under suspicion of possessing class A drugs, rather than the more serious money laundering and drug offences for which he was actually being investigated.
Withnell then e-mailed the document to Matthew Cumberbatch, an associate of Mr Sandford.
Ms Watson said: "He wanted to demonstrate to Mr Cumberbatch that he had the ability to maintain intelligence and he hoped he would help him with his debts."
A statement from Det Insp Maddox, a GMP detective, said the defendant's corruption had a detrimental impact on the police and "eroded" public confidence.
Alex Leach, defending, said: "Out of pride and shame he concealed his financial difficulties and aspects of his personal life until he became completely isolated to those around him.
“He started to take decisions that were totally out of character.
"He didn't stop for thought — he carried on in a downward spiral."
His father, a former police officer, said his son became "vacant, withdrawn and illogical".
Withnell has children and has been finding his time in custody on remand for seven months "frightening", the court heard. He served in the police for 12 years.
Sentencing him, Judge Michael Henshell said: "Offences like this shatter police confidence.
"Your personal life was out of control. You made extremely unwise relationships for a police officer.
“The fact is you were crippled with debt — you saw the opportunity to obtain money from Smethurst and you did.”
He said his actions were "corrupt false patter similar to a corrupt false salesman".
Speaking about the false text message, he added: "Police should have been on other duties but you were trying to make some defence to act under duress.
"It was an enormous waste of police time."
Withnell admitted all the charges.
