I'm not a nationalist as such, but I can't see how you can be expected to throw out a thousand years of national identity an not expect some opposition. The Scots who want Independence will hark back to Robert the Bruce or Bonnie Prince Charlie and in the same way the English will hark back to Henry V and Agincourt etc if they were to be assimilated into a United States of Europe.
The problem with the EU is it was conceived with the premise of eventually becoming such a Superstate and I can't see that this will ever be a good thing.

As WUB has said, the EU financial system is likely to collapse at some point anyway, so all of these arguments are fairly academic.

Culture changes happen at various rates.
Some are quite instantaneous, some last, others fade quickly but leave a mark.

WTF has that got to do with the issue of the EU, at all? Again, choice. People obviously choose to eat & drink at KFC McD's Pizzahut Starbucks etc etc, because if they didn't, those food franchises wouldn't be there, simple as that.

And thanks for the history lesson re Manchester, however I'm quite aware of the fact that the city has a long history of immigration, and that it started with the birth of the industrial revolution, and that's great. But it also isn't at all relevant to the EU-style deliberate agenda-based forced mass immigration we're seeing throughout the whole of europe now, it was more about cause & effect.

And I think that really, deep deep down, you do know the difference...

Tbh I am confused by the whole ukip thing - whether ruled over by westminster or brussels makes fuck all difference to me both have as much in common with me and interest in my needs as each other.

From the very little I have read about the eu my understanding is the whole thing was set up in order to counter balance nationalism and reduce the chance of member states going to war with one another through shared industry but as with all bureaucracy has morphed into a great big costly venture that serves the interests of bureaucracy as opposed to the people it is supposed to represent.

I also don't get nationalism. I feel like I should be proud of my 'britishness' but I am not sure why. I cannot think of anything that is 'uniquely' british that there is to be proud of. I am not ashamed to be british, I am fascinated by our history but no more so then I am the history of other nations.

Nationalism feels so very selfish - it excludes others and breed superiority complexes and discrimination. Not something I feel comfortable with.
