Day off+heat+smoke=mind wandering.

My money would be on "English Culture" being:
Fish and chips
Getting trolleyed on a Friday night.
Posh and Bex
Lonsdale hoodies
Christmas
Cats and dogs
Duty-free baccy and fags
IKEA catalogues
Summer holidays
The soaps
Lie ins on Sunday
Gok wan
Watching cookery shows whilst waiting for your micro meal to ping
Pringles
Haribos
Going red at the first sign of the Sun
The world cup of 66 and two 'Great' wars
The school run
Choccy at Easter
Steak, pork, ham, roast tatas
Sit coms
Police dramas
Big bore kits and stainless zorsts
Playstation

did i leave the oven on?
who are all these dark people?
is it gay to jerk a dude off?
what if everyone could hear my thoughts but acts as if they cant? i wonder if i can try to make them sound like their own thoughts and they get mixed up.
my limbless friend will die alone

Well they are great believers in good old British laws as opposed to sharia law...except when they are getting nicked left right and centre for crimes as varied as travelling with a fake passport, paedophilia and assaulting plod.
They're not against all Muslims yer know, just the extremists, extremists being anyone who believes in Allah and everyone knows Allah wasn't British!

It was a slightly different question I posed; "which aspects of British culture have been lost to immigration?" or summat similar, flummoxed em even more!

If I recall we provided more examples (somewhat tongue in cheek ones, I remember offering cobbled streets) than they could manage between em if they were still trying to find a solitary answer now.

The word 'culture' is just a convenient way to describe all the interactions and creations that take place within 'society', which is in itself a simple way of explaining something that would otherwise be immensely complex and intangible.

There is no culture, but that which we make for ourselves.

Having a massive inflatable meathead & gut with loads of tattoos, and chanting letters of the alphabet followed by some minor skirmishes seems to be a popular pastime.
Getting minged & snorting wallop on coaches to various towns. (flags in the window, and a bit of shoplifting at the service station)
Having orange wives who talk like they're fresh out of an episode of Jeremy Kyle.
Reading any old twaddle on the internet about Muslims and swallowing it all as teh twoof.
Hiding their love for the fuhrer when required.
Steering their kids prams well away from Muslims for fear of them being interfered with or sprouting beards & chanting about the infectious Allah.
Set the controls for the heart of the earth.

Indeed. When reggae met punk we got 2-Tone. Many EDL would claim 2-Tone is British culture musically without an ounce of irony as they stand there with their skinheads (the original skinheads were black!). It's easy to form a confused identity if you pick and choose bits of life/culture without having the foggiest idea about the circumstances that lead to them.

The thing with the edl and all the other 'hate groups' that spring up the moment it looks like any other marginalised group is getting or likely to get equal 'rights' is that there is an overwhelming sense of entitlement and jealousy.

I personally do feel that certain aspects of 'english' culture have changed but this has more to do with a culture evolving due to changing attitudes rather then because of 'immigrants'.

Jobs for life no longer exist but this has much more to do with changing business practices, women in the workplace and technological advances as it does having a growing immigrant workforce.

Expectations have also changed as consumerism has become the new religion and internet shopping the new 'church'.

Communities have mutated where once whole towns were built around a factory or a mine and people would live in one place their entire lives, the pursuit of home ownership and the ability to travel greater distances has ment that in order to feel part of a community more effort is involved.

It is this need to identify as being part of a 'group' that leads individuals to join organisations such as the edl or a conspiracy group or shed lovers uk or whatever group it is that offers a similar world view and motivation as your own.

Marginalised peoples often form very close knit, proactive group in order to protect their interests whether it be feminists, homosexuals, immigrants or scientologists.

The white 'english' heterosexual male has had his world changed dramatically since the world wars. No longer the 'king of his castle', numero uno, judge jury and executioner.

For many males this is not an issue far from being threatened by the equality being granted others he embraces it adapts and welcomes the changes and the challenges living in a more equal society brings. For others the loss of 'status' is too much and they hark back with rose tinted glasses to the halcyon days where they were at the top of their foodchain that reinforces their superiority complex.

Womens roles in such groups as the edl are a little more complex I think in part a backlash against perceived female subjugation - part pure bigotry and part 'stand by your man'
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.
