I read an article about this programme yesterday:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/a...orking-class-britain
But what has transpired is something so different that the two academics concerned have asked for their names to be removed from the credits. The series has been cut from three episodes to two, partly through the removal of a section on the role played by council housing both in liberating millions from horrendous living conditions and in cementing a certain perception of what it means to be working class in Britain. (I was involved in advising and a small amount of filming on this section)

The result leaves the impression that, in the words of the OU's Jason Toynbee, "the working class doesn't exist any more", adding: "When it comes to social issues I'm just not satisfied that the corporation is capable of taking an informed and critical line any longer. The urge to rely on celebrities and a tabloid narrative seems irresistible." Acknowledging that most people in Britain work is one thing; to state that there is such a thing as a class structure affecting the lives of those people who work is, apparently, quite another – and a topic that cannot be broached.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

you know we see the world in our own eyes, and then we are told how we see the world, but more loudly. these fat fuckers in glasses and suits writing about tv like it is an accurate reflection.. its planting ideas and manipulating thoughts. you either agree or disagree with the premise. but the thought is centered around that axis, nothing more and nothing less. am i just high, or does that make sense?

You're right (and might be high too :rab: ) and it's amazing how many people are perfectly happy to be told what to think and feel about things.

For all the yackety yack going on from various left or right wingnut media , I've yet to see a single politician or news article define the terms they use for class, such as the 'stressed/squeezed middle-middle' etc.
Both the tories and the labour creeps often refer to this 'squeezed middle' but for all the talk it may as well be about belt sizes.
The economist made an attempt a while back but stopped well short of mentioning any salary figures so you are ofc left 'imagining' who they are referring to.

Working class to me IMHO is anyone with a PAYE taxed job earning around £100k or less. I've never seen anyone brave enough to say it though lol :p

Middle class to me is either self employed and in excess of 100k pa OR long term high grade public servant with a salary in excess of 150k + benefits OR directors/CEO/CFO of middle to large corporations with similar salaries but minimal shares.
Upper middle would be front bench politicians, some peers etc. with a lot of invested shares/land ownership etc returning a large stealth income that runs into the million+ bracket.

Upper class now to me is someone who is not tax resident, earns billions and/or royalty. Doesn't bother doing much work if at all.

If one reads these articles about the 'squeezed middle' you'd be forgiven for thinking they actually meant the middle of the working class, perhaps the 50k or so employed PAYE workers who take home 3k a month after tax, but if you read about what their spending power is you get the impression its at least double that or more... childless couples with 50k each perhaps? lol...
