Note that when both planes are producing trails at the beginning, the trails mingle, which implies they are indeed in formation at a similar altitude. And yet one plane's trail is 'on', 'off', 'on'...How does this happen in the context of regular contrails? Surely both would either be 'on' or both would be 'off'?

Humidity and temperature won't be even in all areas so contrails can appear/disappear as they travel. I'd expect it see it present for the most part though. I'd also normally expect to see it dissipate not expand out into massive clouds.

Yeah I get that but these planes are seemingly in close formation at the same altitude...do you see why that provokes the question, why does only one plane lose it's trail?

I've been in plenty of planes myself (again this weekend groan...) and often seen planes cross and a couple of times I shit myself cos I thought they'd hit but there was thousands of feet between them.
