But having said that, you often encounter the type of assertions from those childless people, such as the ones (no offence intended) expressed by Rep, who thinks that if a child is being willful, it's because you have a damaged relationship - and any form of sanctioning is scorned, so professional help is needed. And (honestly, no offence intended :D ) that's just ridiculous.

If a child is "being wilful" it is because it has will, I don't see a problem with this.

:D And that's where you'd make as good a parent as the scientists I mentioned on another thread...
Gilly wrote:
Hahaha! Just watched 10 minutes of that nanny programme. It was like watching a car crash.

2 scientists have a 3 yr old & a 1 yr old, and the kids are shrieking and trying to kill each other - dad's going, "No dear, we don't want you to do that", while one's braying the other over the head with a bottle & ignoring him!

They make shows about any old bollix these days.

Of course reasoning is always the proper basis of teaching kids. The problem is, small children are to a great extent focussed on their immediate wants, and don't take distress caused to others much into account sometimes. If you don't 'impose your will', by laying down rules about conduct, and think you're going to get by with reasoning alone with a tired, cranky tot, then you end up like the couple in that programme. They daren't go out in public much with them much, because they scream and demand, and try to run off, and drag products off shop shelves, and ignore mum & dad's attempts at reasoning, and are generally a disruptive pain in the arse to all within earshot.

It's not abuse to make them behave properly, and it does them no favours to avoid doing so. It's basic common sense.

Laissez faire parenting is neglectful. Neglect is abuse.

You cannot "impose your will" and claim that you can't get by with reason, these things are in direct contradiction.
If you abuse your children they will be irrational and they will not trust you, you can't have it both ways.
I don't watch tv so I don't get the reference.

Would you care to enlighten us?
I don't think handing a child over to some other people at such a young age is a good is a for the child by the way, not a place to meet healthy children.

Why would you think children socialising in a creche would be unhealthy??? :conf:

Because the parents are not there, the children are being dropped off, often with underpaid strangers, it is neglectful.
Are prisons a good place to "socialise'?

Well you've skipped bits to make what was said fit in with your spin on things. I said you can't get by with reason alone.

Nobody's advocated 'abusing' children, btw. I'd LOVE to see you trying to put what you preach into practice. Your nerves would be irrevocably tattered, and your kids would probably be psycho brats.

You don't need to watch TV, because I've described the events to you. :)

Yes I will enlighten you.....the creche analogy was to have you and IAAwhatevA overdosed on young children.
But having had my second brew, I've had a second thought...you two would probably damage and mentally scar them for the rest of their lives!

As you have asked me a question and I have answered it....allow me to ask you and IAAwhatevA one, and show me the same respect and answer it please......
Do you have children?
I am just curious and am not going to pass any comment whatsoever on whether your answer is a yay or a nay..I promise.
:jane:

I've already stated I don't have children, it is completely irrelevant, it's like saying if someone is single they shouldn't comment on the morality of rape.
Morality and Reason are absolute and not pliable to the whims of an individual situation.

I suppose children's books are also the sign of an abused child, they should be straight into encyclopedias!

Caterpillars don't eat cake and I've irreversibly damaged not 1 but 2 children with this disinformation.

Exactly, it's a serious subject, so unless you have something rational to say or some empirical evidence to present you might want to save those type of comments.

No, I start every story time with a disclaimer: all events are fictional and any similarity to reality or real people is merely coincidental kids.

To my mind though, if you're not even thinking about 'it', then you're not actually celebrating 'it', if that makes sense.

That's interesting. I think a lot of people think like that. When I was interested in this stuff, I did a lot of reading up on rituals and their meanings. A big part of modern ritual is in fact, people not really understanding what they're doing.

If something is normalised to the extent that something like Christmas is, for example, most people in the country will be exchanging gifts, drinking and eating a certain food, all on the same day. Many will even be watching the same things on television.

= mass 'ritual', in some folks eyes anyway. As I understand it, it's all about energy and focusing/harnessing of said energy. Many also believe mass energy focused in a particular direction could be the most powerful force on earth, for good or ill.

Another example might be thousands gathering at the London Eye to watch a firework display at a certain time. Again, mass ritual. Whether or not you believe it might be or even consider it all, if it were being orchestrated by someone, somewhere for that very purpose, they'd actually have pulled off a bit of a blinder, ritual-wise.

You can get really silly with it, but hopefully you see my point.

However, I wish to shit on all Christmases no more. :D
